Lake Area Technical College’s curriculum for the following programs meets the educational requirements for professional licensure in South Dakota and many other states. Professional licensure and certification requirements often vary from state to state. Prospective or current students considering an academic program that leads to a professional license or certification are strongly encouraged to seek guidance from the appropriate licensing agency in the state you plan to work before beginning an affiliated academic program.

LATC provides notifications to prospective and current students seeking information for any in-person or distance education program leading to professional licensure as required by Federal regulations (34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v) and 34 CFR 668.43(c)).

Aviation Maintenance Technology

Aviation Maintenance Program students must graduate from the program to be eligible to take the FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification tests. Cosmetology

Cosmetology
Graduates of the LATC Cosmetology program complete either 1,500 or 2,100 hours of cosmetology education. They must complete the 1,500 hour program and also pass the National Interstate Council of State Board of Cosmetology written theory and practical exams in order to be licensed in South Dakota. Students wishing to practice in a state that requires more than 1,500 hours will need to complete LATC’s 2,100 hour program.

Med/Fire Rescue

Med/Fire Rescue
In addition to the EMT or Paramedic options listed below, graduates of the Med/Fire Rescue Associate’s Degree option may also test to become Pro Board certified in Firefighter I and II, HAZMAT Awareness and Operations, and Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter (ARFF). If a state or department recognizes the Pro Board certifications, no other training or testing may be required. However, some states or departments may require additional training, testing or completion of a new hire probationary training academy in addition to the certifications offered through LATC. Many states and departments require firefighters to also be certified at the EMT level as well as Firefighter II.

Medical Assisting

Medical Assisting students graduating from a CAAHEP accredited school are eligible to sit for a national exam. There are two options available for graduates of the program the American Association of Medical Assistant (AAMA) which provides the graduate with the CMA credential or the American Medical Technologists (AMT) which provides the credential RMA. Both are recognized nationally. Graduates are not required to take or pass the exam although it is strongly encouraged. Medical Laboratory Technician

Graduates of the MLT program are eligible to sit for the Medical Laboratory Technician, MLT (ASCP) certification exam with the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification. South Dakota does not require an additional licensure to practice as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Those states that require an additional licensure to practice as an MLT include: California, Hawaii, Florida, New York, North Dakota, Tennessee, Louisiana, Nevada, West Virginia, Montana, Georgia.
