Lake Area Tech welcomed Aaron to the Automotive Technology faculty in August 2019. He is a graduate of North Dakota State College of Science’s Automotive Technology program. Aaron brings 25 years of experience to the table as an Automotive Technician. He lives in Watertown and is married with one daughter, two grandsons, and three step children. In his free time, he enjoys fishing and camping.

 

 

Aaron Weeldreyer

Aviation Flight Instructor

Aaron joined the Lake Area Tech team in June 2019 as a Flight Instructor. He is a graduate of LATI’s Aviation Maintenance program. Aaron began flying in 2016 after getting an introductory flight in a 1947 Aeronca Champ. Since that time, he has successfully met the FAA requirements as a commercial pilot with instrument rating. More recently, he has been providing pilot instruction for area pilots and student pilots. In his free time, Aaron enjoys spending time with his two nieces and a nephew and helping on his family’s farm. He lives in Watertown.

 

 

Adam Lauseng

Adam joined the Lake Area Tech team as a maintenance tech in July 2019. He is a graduate of Watertown High School. Previously, he was a nighttime maintenance worker then the head of maintenance at the former middle school. Currently, he is also the head of maintenance at Lutheran Church of our Redeemer, a night cleaner at WAPA, and he does handy-man jobs, mowing, and home maintenance on the side. In his free time, family is number one. They like to go shopping, camping, fishing, hunting, riding motorcycle and four-wheel riding.

Previously, she worked in various job settings including MoDak Dairy, Pipestone Systems, Bramble Park Zoo, veterinary hospitals and as an adjunct ag instructor. In her free time, Alexis enjoys fishing, camping and hanging out with her dogs.

Alissa joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2013. Prior to that, she worked as a RN on the Medical/Surgical/Pediatric unit, where she continues to work as needed and teach Pediatric Advanced Life Support classes. Alissa earned her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing from Presentation College in 2004 and her Master’s Degree in Nursing Education from Western Governors University in 2016 . She and her husband, Mark, live in Watertown with their four children. In her spare time, she enjoys shopping, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Lake Area Tech welcomed Amanda in July 2018 as a new member of the Children’s Educare staff. Amanda earned her degree in Human Services/Child Development from LATI. She has worked as a temp and part-time employee at Educare and now holds a full-time position. Amanda is married to Terry and they have three children: Kindra, Kenzie, and Kaelyn. They live in Florence. In her free time, Amanda enjoys crafting, spending time with her family, and being outside.

Amber starting teaching in the Practical Nursing Program in 2011. Her responsibilities include medical surgical clinical and lecturing. She also teaches OB theory and OB clinical at Prairie Lakes Hospital. Prior to working at LATI she worked on the Medical/Surgical/Pediatric unit at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown. Amber is a graduate of Watertown High School and graduated from USD with a BA in Biology. She then received a BS in Nursing from South Dakota State University and a Master’s degree from UND in 2013. Amber is married with a son and daughter. She enjoys music, gardening, and spending time outside.

Amy is a 2002 LATI dental assisting graduate who has worked for area dentists over the last 10 years. She joined the DA staff as an instructor in August of 2012. Amy is married and has two boys: Gavin and Carson. They live on an acreage near Kranzburg and enjoy camping and fishing as a family. In her spare time, Amy loves to cook and experiment with cooking.

Andrew Sebek

Med/Fire Rescue

Andrew joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2018 as a Med/Fire Rescue instructor. He is a graduate of LATI’s MFR program. Andrew was a firefighter in his hometown of Claire City, SD, until he earned his degree.  He is currently working as a Paramedic/Firefighter at Watertown Fire Rescue. Andrew is also a technician in high angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, and hazardous materials with a specialty in Highway Emergency response. Andrew and his wife, Misty, have one child and have called Watertown home for the past five years. He enjoys spending time with his family, friends and the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

The Welding program at Lake Area Tech welcomed Andy to its department in August 2017. He is an LATI alum with an AAS degree in Welding Technology. Andy brings seven years of welding production experience from Worthington Industries to the program. Andy’s hobbies include racing, football, basketball, hunting, fishing, and he is an overall sports lover.

Angela is a graduate of Lake Area Tech’s Cosmetology program and is now the Department Supervisor. She began her duties as a substitute instructor here in 2004 and began full-time in 2008. Previously, Angela worked behind the chair since 2002 and was a trainer for newly hired stylists.  She and her husband, Shane, live in Watertown and they have a daughter and son and two dogs. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, shopping, camping, and being with family and friends.

Law Enforcement

Lake Area Tech welcomed Asa to the team in August of 2016 as a Law Enforcement instructor. In 2017, Asa became the department supervisor for the program. Asa is a graduate of Hanston High School in Hanston, KS, and earned an A.A.S. Degree in Elementary Education from Pratt Community College in Pratt, KS. Following that, he completed undergrad and graduate work at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS, where he obtained his undergrad degree in Justice Studies and a Master’s of Professional Studies with a concentration in Criminal Justice. He is also a graduate of the 182nd Basic Training Class of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Asa worked in Law Enforcement at both the municipal and county levels in Kansas and currently serves as a Reserve Officer for the Watertown Police Department. He also worked at Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, KS, as the Dean of Student Services and worked at Watertown High School in the Alternative Education program. Asa is married to Diane and they have three children: Henry, Charles, and Clara who he loves to spend time with. In his free time, Asa enjoys playing and coaching sports. He says he is a native Kansan, but has fallen in love with South Dakota and looks forward to raising his family here in Watertown.

Barbara Kleinjan

General Education/Speech

Barb joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2019 as a Speech Instructor. She has been in education for 41 years. She graduated from South Dakota State University in 1978 with Bachelor’s Degrees in English, German, European History and Speech Education and received her Master’s Degree in Administration and Curriculum Studies from South Dakota State University in 1980. Barb began her teaching career in Arlington, SD. After two years she moved to Sioux Valley Schools where she taught and coached Forensics activities and served as a Modernization Site Director under SD Governor George Mickelson until 2009. For the next ten years she established an Honors Communication Studies program at SDSU and also led study several Honors Study Abroad trips to Europe, Greece and Turkey. Barb and her husband Russ live on a farm near Lake Oakwood and have two children Andy and Val, who are also educators and ​coaches.

The Building Trades Technology program welcomed Ben Bartling to its instructor staff in December 2017. Prior to his position at Lake Area Tech, Ben worked as a Carpentry Foreman for Crestone Builders for five years. Ben attended Southwest State University in Marshall, MN, where he studied Physical Education. He and his wife live in Watertown with their two children. Ben is a huge Minnesota sports fan and he enjoys baseball, hunting, and fishing.

Bob joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2014. He is a graduate of Watertown High School and earned a diploma in mechanical drafting from LATI and his A.A.S. degree in EST from Lake Area Tech. He has 13 years experience as a sign frame finisher, 2 years in custom cabinet building, and a year as an R & D technician. He was also a night shift supervisor at Superior Homes. Bob is married and has three children. In his free time, he enjoys woodworking, electronics, riding bike, playing disc golf and spending time with his family.

Bonnie works in LATI Food Service. She is a graduate of Sisseton High School and worked at the Drake Motor Inn for 35 years before coming to LATI. Bonnie is married and has a daughter, a son, and four grandchildren.

Brad has been in education for 32 years. He graduated from Black Hills State University in 1986 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education/Mathematics and received his Master’s Degree in Administration from South Dakota State University in 2002. Brad began his teaching career in Arlington, SD. After seven years he moved to Watertown where he has been ever since. He taught for 11 years at the Watertown Middle School and prior to coming to LATI he was an Assistant Principal for the Watertown High School. Brad is married with two children.

Physical Therapist Assistant

Brad graduated from the Physical Therapist Assistant program at LATI in 1997 and began working at the Brookings Center for Physical Therapy in Brookings, SD. While there, he worked in numerous settings including outpatient, acute care, SNF’s and home health. In April 2001, he returned to LATI as an instructor for the Physical Therapist Assisting program. Brad lives in Brookings with his wife and two children.

Brady joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2019 as an instructor in the Energy Operations/Technology programs. He is a graduate of LATI’s Energy Operations and Energy Technology programs. Previously, Brady worked at the Big Stone Powerplant as a mechanic and as an operator. Brandon joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2019 as a Computer Information Systems instructor. He is a 2005 graduate of Watertown High School and earned a BS in Psychology from the University of South Dakota in 2010 and also completed his Network Administration AAS from Southeast Technical Institute in 2019.

His experience includes working as a disability claims specialist and hearing officer, providing assistance to the network administrator with maintaining servers and workstations, IT training and troubleshooting for staff, and ran and terminated Ethernet cable. In his free time, Brandon enjoys spending time with family including his wife and English Bulldog, Bubbles, working on vehicles and small engines, riding motorcycle, researching and learning more about new technology, and ice fishing.

Brenda, PTA, has instructed in the Physical Therapist Assistant program since August 1995. She graduated from the College of St. Catherine, St. Mary’s Campus, and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management. Prior to coming to LATI, she worked in numerous areas including acute care, pediatrics, outpatient (including sports medicine), and rehabilitation. Brenda has a special interest in aquatics and geriatrics.  She lives in Watertown with her husband, Don, and has two children, Sydney (LATI Grad) and Lilly (current LATI student).  In her free time, she enjoys teaching ballroom dancing, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.

Brian joined the LATI staff in 2007 and teaches the animal science and nutrition classes. Prior to that, he served in the Army, worked on railroad bridges, and worked at a local co-op. He is a graduate of both the Ag-Production and Ag-Business programs at LATI. Brian still farms and has livestock.

He started working for Lake Area Tech in January 2008. He also spends a majority of his time instructing and training in the Madison school for their program, where Lake Area Tech supplies an instructor.

Brian graduated from Mankato State University with a major in both Business Management and Marketing. Upon completion, Brian worked at a retail agronomy center in Raymond, Minnesota. After that, Brian spent seven years with Rhone Poulenc Ag Company as a manufacture sales representative. In 1998, Brian went to work for West Central Inc. as a Distributor Sales Representative before coming to LATI in 2007.

Brittany earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, received her Masters of Science in Nursing degree with a focus in nursing education from Kaplan University in Iowa, and is currently pursuing her PhD in Nursing from SDSU. Prior to joining LATI in August 2013, Brittany began her nursing career in Fargo, ND on a cardiac progressive care unit, and has since worked in the Critical Care Unit at PLHS in Watertown. Brittany and her husband, John, live in Watertown with their three children. She enjoys repurposing furniture and junk, camping, and spending time with her family.

Brittany joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2016 in the Foundation Office as the Administrative Assistant. Brittany is a graduate of LATI’s Financial Services program and brings experience as a teller at Great Western Bank and, most recently, as a loan officer at Avanti Federal Credit Union. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Michael, and their children, Kinzley, Brynlee and Graham.  Brittany lives in Watertown, where she was born and raised.

Brooks is a graduate from LATI’s Robotics and Electronic Systems Technology programs. He also has his BS in Engineering Management and MS in Education. Brooks has also worked with Dakota Automation, Daktronics, and Automation Technology. He is currently enlisted in the South Dakota Army National Guard as a MLRS Repairer. He also sits on the ATEA National Board of Trustees, is secretary for the ATEA Region 5 board, and helps with many local and state committees. Brooks is married with 3 daughters and spends his free time fishing, hunting, and enjoying his kids’ sports and activities.

Lake Area Tech welcomed Carl back in August 2017 as an adjunct instructor. Carl was a Diesel Technology instructor/program supervisor for 32 years before retiring. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from South Dakota State University. In his free time, Carl and his wife, Mary, teach social dance lessons. Over the years, he has had more than 2200 students. He also enjoys antique farm tractors and machinery.

Carla is a graduate of Northern State University with a double major in elementary education and special education. She also earned an early childhood special ed endorsement. Her experience includes birth to 6th grade instruction for 10 years and she was an AEL instructor for five years for Black Hills Special Services. Carla and her husband Mark live in Brookings. Together they have seven children and thirteen grandchildren.

Casey comes to LATI with eight years of secondary teaching experience. He was a computer and business instructor at Watertown Senior High School. His computer expertise is in the area of media and Visual FX, where he continues to produce content. He is originally from Dickinson, ND. Casey graduated from Dickinson State University with BS Education Degrees in Business and Art as well as minors in Computer Science, Graphic Design, and Marketing. He received his Master’s Degree from Dakota State University in Technology Education. Casey is married with two daughters. He enjoys building trades, outdoors, playing music, and coaching track and field and soccer through the Watertown School District.

Cathy is a member of Market 65 and brings previous experience working at the Human Service Agency as a Program Coordinator, as an aide for the Watertown School District, and as the owner/teacher at the Tot Spot preschool. She attended Northern State College for two years for Business Marketing. In her free time, Cathy loves following her kids’ sports, cooking, and volunteering.

Chad is the instructor and department supervisor for the Environmental Technology program. Chad teaches public health protection classes and environmental health protection classes. Prior to joining the team at LATI, he was the director for the Terry Redlin Freshwater Institute in Watertown. Chad grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska with a BA in Biology. He is married with three sons and enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking, and acting in plays with the local theater company.

The LATI Diesel program welcomed alum Chase Bratland to the instructor staff in January 2018. Chase earned his AAS Degree in Diesel Technology/Truck Option. Prior to joining the LATI team, he was employed as a diesel tech, specializing in diesel fuel pump and injector rebuilding. In his free time, Chase enjoys riding his motorcycle, spending time with his family, and being with his two dogs, Piper and Diesel.

Chris, PT, serves as the Program Director for the Physical Therapist Assistant Program. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of North Dakota and a Master of Education degree from the University of Phoenix. Prior to coming to Lake Area Tech, she practiced physical therapy in the areas of acute care, pediatrics, geriatrics, and outpatient services. Chris has a special interest in of women’s health issues, wound care, and orthopedic disorders.

Lake Area Tech welcomed back Chris in August 2018 as an admissions representative. He was in that role previously, but took a two-year military leave to complete flight school. Chris flies the HH-60 Blackhawk for the South Dakota National Guard. In addition, he also works part-time on his family farm in Selby, SD. Chris is a graduate of Lake Area Tech’s Ag Business program through which he earned his A.A.S. degree. In his free time, Chris enjoys working on cars, hunting, fishing, being outdoors, and and he is hoping to get more into travel/backpacking.  He also loves spending time with family and friends and being active in his local church.

Lake Area Tech welcomed Christy Randall to its team in August 2017 as a General Education/Computer instructor. Christy is a graduate of Florence School (1990), earned an A.A.S. Degree in Office Systems Technology from LATI (1991), completed a B.S. Degree in Business Education from Dakota State University in Madison, SD (1996), and earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from Dakota State University (2007).

Prior to joining LATI, Christy taught for the Florence School District from Sept 2006-August 2017 as a 7-12 computer and business instructor, taught High School Computer/Business and was the Network Administrator at Summit School District from 1997-2006, and she is currently an adjunct instructor for National American University. Christy has two children, Jaiden (21) and Kylie (17).  In her free time, she loves riding horse and going on trail rides, going for walks, and spending lots of time outside.  She lives on an acreage north of Florence, SD.

In addition to his degree, he has been involved in carpentry all of his life, working for his father’s carpentry business when he wasn’t in school. He also worked for Crestone Builders. In his spare time, Cody enjoys rifle and bow hunting and snowmobiling with his friends in the mountains.

Cully joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2014. He is a graduate of Watertown High School and has been doing body work most of his life, starting out working part-time at a local body shop while he was in middle school. Cully has worked at many body shops, most recently at the local GM/Toyota dealership where he was employed for 25 years. Cully and his wife enjoy spending time at car shows. He also likes working on fixer-uppers, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and watching or helping with all kinds of car racing.

Dan joined the Lake Area Tech team as a custodian in August 2018. He earned an Associate Degree in Printing/Graphics from North Dakota State School of Science and was employed at the Watertown Public Opinion for 40 years in the Printing and Graphics Department. There, his duties included Photoshop photo correction manipulation, pre-press plating, CtP operation, and maintenance. In his free time, Dan enjoys sports of most types, computer photo work, and spending time with his family. He has lived in Watertown for 40 years, and has been married for 30 of those years with two great kids.

Dan joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2017 as an instructor in the Custom Paint & Fab department. Previously, he worked at Chesley/River Valley Body Shop for 11 years and at Olson & Johnson Body Shop for 20 years, 10 years as manager. Dan is a graduate of Minneota (MN) High School and also attended Willmar Technical Institute (Ridgewater College) in the Autobody program. In his free time, he enjoys home improvement, motorcycling, lake time, old cars, and memorabilia.

He started with Lake Area Tech in July of 2008. In Darren’s spare time, he enjoys camping during the summers with his friends and family and taking snowmobile trips to the hills in the winter.

Darrin started at Lake Area Technical Institute as an Assistant Bookstore Manager in July of 2008. Prior to Lake Area Tech he worked as the Assistant Meat Market Manager at Hy-Vee in Watertown. Darrin is married with one son. He is a lifelong resident of Watertown and is a dedicated hunter and fisherman.

Deni joined the Lake Area Tech team in September 2018 as the Build Dakota Program Manager. She has been with the Build Dakota program at the state level since the program began. Deni has a Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education with endorsements in middle level and family and consumer science. She also holds a Master’s degree in K-12 Educational Leadership and Administration, both obtained through through Northern State University.

Previously, she was a 5th grade and FACS teacher. Deni lives in Wall, SD, and has two sons, Ben and Kyle. Ben is in 7th grade so her main hobby is following him around to watch his many sporting events. Kyle is grown and lives in Sioux Falls.

Dennis graduated from Lake Area Technical Institute in May 1979 from Electronics II. He has worked for LATI since July 1997 and became the Information Technology/Media Manager in 1998. Dennis has been in the computer industry more than 20 years and currently holds an A+, Network+, Cisco Certified Network Associate and Cisco Certified Academic Instructor Certifications. He has lived in the Watertown area for more than 20 years with his wife, Jolene, and their two sons.

Diane joined the Lake Area Tech team in July 2014. Most recently, she was Assistant Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, KS. Prior to that, she served as the Executive Director of Norton City/County Economic Development in Norton, KS. Diane completed her Master of Education degree with an emphasis in Educational Technology from Ottawa University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. She also studied at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China, for a year. Diane and her husband, Asa, are originally from rural western Kansas. They have three children: Henry, Charles, and Clara. In their free time, they enjoy spending time outside at their home near Lake Pelican and learning about Henry’s favorite toys, Skylanders.

Don joined the team at LATI in February 2012. Prior to that, he was a manager in the lumber/sales commercial contract department at Menards for 24 years in Bismarck and Watertown. Don and his wife have four children and nine grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys woodworking and driving his ’55 Chevy.

Doreen joined the Lake Area Tech team in January 2019 as a nursing instructor. Doreen earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from SDSU in 1996 and a Master’s degree in Nursing Leadership from Regis University in 2007. She has experience as an RN at Prairie Lakes Hospital working the Medical/Surgical/Peds floor and being a charge nurse. She has been in nursing education since 1999 and worked at LATI from 2001-2009 and as a USD nursing instructor from 2009-2018. In her free time, Doreen enjoys spending time with family and friends, gardening, camping, cooking, and being outdoors as she loves the country life. She is married and has three children.

Elizabeth joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2013. She is a 2012 graduate of the LATI Cosmetology program. She grew up in the cosmetology industry as her mom is a cosmetologist. She worked in two salons as a manager and spa attendant and, after attending cosmetology school, worked behind the chair as a cosmetologist for a year before joining LATI. Elizabeth lives 18 miles outside of Watertown with her husband, Kurtys, and their four children. They also have a Great Dane named Minnie. In their spare time, they love to visit friends and family and travel as much as possible.

A 2010 graduate of Lake Area Tech’s Practical Nursing program, Liz joined the LATI nursing staff in August 2015. After receiving her diploma, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Nursing degree from USD in 2014. Prior to that, Liz received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from USD in 2005 and Master of Science degree in Counseling from USD in 2007. She was a counselor at the Waverly/South Shore school for three years before returning to school for nursing. Liz continues to work PRN at Prairie Lakes Hospital where she was a registered nurse on the Med/Surg/Peds floor for one year and a circulating nurse in the operating room for two and a half years. Liz and her husband, Mike, live in Watertown. Mike is an accountant at Vilhauer, Raml and Snyder. They have two children, Devon and Arianna. In her free time, she enjoys reading, exercising, fishing, running, listening to music, and attending her kids’ activities.

Emily joined the Lake Area Tech team in January 2015 as a TAA grants project officer and moved to the position of Finance Officer in 2018. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration and an MBA from the University of SD. Previously, Emily was employed with McGladrey, Inc. for 10 years providing healthcare clients with financial analysis and Medicare cost reporting. She was also employed with Minneapolis Heart Institute as an outreach operations coordinator for three years. Emily and her husband, Mike, live on an acreage east of Watertown near Kranzburg where they raise their daughter, Savannah. In her free time, Emily enjoys spending time with family and friends, gardening, traveling, and shopping.

Emily joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2019 as an Admissions Representative. She earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and Economics from the University of South Dakota. Since moving to Watertown, she has held three part-time positions and spent summers in college as a camp counselor at NeSoDak Bible Camp in Waubay, SD. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her nephews and niece and being outdoors with her fiance and German Shorthair pup, Jep. Emily grew up on the Missouri River in Chamberlain, SD, so whether swimming, boating, or fishing, the most relaxing place to be for her is on the water.

Eric joined the LATI staff as the Director of Enrollment in July 2012. Previously, Eric was an Enrollment Counselor and Assistant Director at Mount Marty College in Watertown. He also served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during Operation Iraqi Freedom II in 2004. Eric and his wife, Andrea, live in Watertown with their two children. He enjoys spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and watching football. Eric has a B.A. in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Mount Marty College.

Gary is a Watertown native who brings 24 years of experience to the precision machining program, where he began as an instructor in August 2014. In addition to working in the precision machining industry, Gary spent eight years working for the Minnesota Prison System in the Drug and Alcohol Treatment program for men exiting prison. He also spent six years as an OTR truck driver and driver trainer. He is a Watertown High School grad and also attended the one-year LATI Machining program in 1977. Gary has two sons who are both married and he also has a grandson. In his free time, he enjoys precision shooting, working on guns, working on cars, and playing disc golf.

Gina is the Assessment Coordinator and HLC Liaison Officer at Lake Area Tech. She graduated from LATI in 2004 with an AAS in Robotics. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Technology Management from Mount Marty College and a Master’s Degree in Education from Dakota State University.  Gina lives in Watertown and has three children, Ryan, Derick and Kaile.

Med / Fire Rescue

Greg has been an instructor for the Med/Fire Rescue program since August 2009. After high school, Greg served abroad and state-side in the US Army for nearly 14 years. He is currently a Firefighter/Paramedic for the City of Watertown and has been an EMS since 1996 with 18 years of Fire Rescue experience. In addition to a Paramedic/Firefighter, Greg is also a Structural Collapse Technician, has been an instructor for nine years and is a technician in confined space rescue, trench rescue, high angle rope rescue, and hazardous materials. Greg is also trained to the Specialist level in Highway Emergency response and Rail Tank Cars. Greg and his wife, Kory, have three children and have called Watertown home for the last 11 years. He enjoys spending time with his family, friends and the outdoors hunting, camping, and fishing.

Greg graduated from Lake Area Tech in 1977 with his Airframe and Powerplant certificate and entered the Air Force as an aircraft maintenance technician. While in the Air Force he maintained F-4D Phantoms, Lockheed T-33 Shooting Stars, and F-15A Eagles. He also maintained aero club Cessna 172s and taught an airframe and powerplant course on a part-time basis. Greg and his wife Ginny have three children and seven grandchildren.

Lake Area Tech welcomed Greg to the Ag Department in August 2016. Greg’s experience on his family farm includes working with his cow/calf operation, seedstock, and feedlot operations. Greg has past experience as a feed consultant, vet assistant, and an AI technician with Select Sires. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree from SDSU in Animal Science and a minor in Ag Business. Greg lives on a farm near Ortley with his wife Lindsey, daughter Clara, and son Harrison. In his free time, he enjoys being outdoors, hunting, fishing, watching football, working on the farm, playing guitar and riding horse.

Med / Fire Rescue

Gregg is an instructor for the Med/Fire Rescue program and started in his position in August 2009. He is a 1984 graduate of Watertown High School and a 1989 graduate of LATI. Gregg is currently a captain at Watertown Fire Rescue and has 18 years of Fire Rescue experience. He has technician level experience in confined space, trench rescue, high angle rope rescue, hazmat, hazmat tank car specialist, and fire arson investigation. Gregg and his wife, Becky, have two children.

The Lake Area Tech team welcomed Hawa to its staff in May 2018. She attended Sierra Leone school in Africa and brings five years experience as a hotel supervisor in Boston. Hawa likes to help people, work as a team player, hang out with kids, and doesn’t mind going the extra mile to help.

Heather joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2018 as a General Education Human Relations instructor. She is a graduate of Watertown High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Minnesota State University – Mankato and a Master’s degree in Counseling and Human Development from SDSU. Previously, Heather worked at the Human Service Agency as an Employment Consultant, at the Department of Social Services as a Social Worker, for the Watertown School District as a Migrant Social Worker and, most recently, as a K-12 School Counselor for the Florence School District. She has a background in sexual and domestic violence advocacy, psychology and mental health, community outreach, and school counseling. Heather and her husband live in Watertown with their two boys. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, health & fitness, volleyball, softball, shopping, being outside, and spending time with family and friends.

Lake Area Tech welcomed Heidi Mehlberg as its campus accounts rep in January 2016. Since then, she has joined the General Education faculty. Heidi earned her Business Management degree at Northern State University. Prior to joining the LATI team, she worked in the Student Accounts and Accounts Receivable departments at Presentation College. Heidi lives by Raymond, SD, and enjoys hunting and hanging out with family and friends.

Heidi joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2018 as a Nursing instructor. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from SDSU, and a Master of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Phoenix with a focus on Nursing, Education, and Management. Heidi has been a nurse educator for the past 19 years with the University of South Dakota. She has taught in many different avenues including online, hybrid and blended programs, along with classroom instruction. Heidi has taught in all areas including medical-surgical, mental health, community, and pediatrics. She also worked at Prairie Lakes Hospital for eight years as a charge nurse, pediatric nurse, and a medical-surgical nurse. She is married and has four boys. In her free time, she enjoys attending her kids’ sporting activities, being outdoors, and hanging out with friends.

Heidi joined the LATI team in January 2014 as a marketing assistant and moved to the Health, Safety and Wellness Coordinator position in July 2016. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Concordia College and has previously worked as a social worker at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System, a family advocate for Headstart, and as a case manager at the Human Service Agency. Heidi is married to Stacy and they have three boys. In her free time, she is a Make-A-Wish granter and also enjoys attending her children’s activities, reading, and spending time with family.

Jackie began teaching at LATI in the fall of 2005 in the Human Services Technician program and is the current department supervisor. She graduated from Mankato State University in 1986 with a degree in Home Economics Education. Prior to teaching at LATI, she was employed for 18 years at the Human Service Agency in Watertown, SD, where she worked with adults with developmental disabilities. She served as a group home supervisor, case manager, and most recently as the behavior intervention specialist. She is married and has one daughter.

Jacob is the Case IH instructor at Lake Area Tech. After high school, Jacob served in the U.S. Air Force. He is a 2009 graduate of the LATI Welding Technology program and a 2011 graduate of the LATI Diesel Technology program. Jacob also worked for Titan Machinery of Watertown. He is married and enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing sports.

Med/Fire Rescue

Jake joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2018 as a Med/Fire Rescue instructor. He was a member of the first MFR class at LATI and earned his degree in 2010. After graduating high school in 2006, he joined the Waubay Volunteer Fire Department and knew that was what he wanted to do for a career. Jake attended the Med/Fire Rescue program at LATI and obtained his paramedic, firefighter I and II, and ARFF certifications. While attending LATI, he was hired at Watertown Fire Rescue in November of 2009, where he still works today as a firefighter/paramedic.  During his career at Watertown Fire Rescue, he received his certifications at the technician’s level in high angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, structural collapse, and HAZMAT.  He is also a Rescue 3 International Technical Rope Rescue instructor.  Jake grew up on a farm outside of Waubay and currently resides in Watertown.  In his spare time, he enjoys being outdoors, hunting, and fishing.

Jamison graduated from Lake Area Tech’s welding program in 2001. He then started his career with Angus Palm and was a lead welder for seven years and a trainer for three years. Here, Jamison is an instructor for first-year welding students and teaches gas tungsten arc welding, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and high quality deposition welding. Jamison is married with two daughters and two grandchildren. Jamison enjoys ice fishing and also keeps busy on his ranch by South Shore raising cattle and hay.

Janelle graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a minor in Alcohol & Drug Studies. Prior to teaching at LATI, she was employed with the LATI Foundation Office and the Human Service Agency for 11 years in Watertown. She worked in the NE Prevention Resource Center working with communities and regional coalitions on alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention activities. She is married to her husband Toby, of 21 years, and they have three children. Janelle enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends.

Lake Area Tech welcomed Jeff York as an Agriculture instructor in January 2017. Jeff is an LATI graduate of the Agriculture program with degrees in the Ag Business and Commodity Merchandising options. Jeff resides on his family farm with his wife, Jaycee, and brings experience from his small corn and soybean operation as well as 20 years military.  In his free time, he enjoys golfing, motorcycling, and traveling.

LATI welcomed Jenna in February 2014 as a bookstore associate. Prior to joining LATI, she worked in the printing industry for 25 years at two local printing businesses. She is a life-long resident of Watertown and is a graduate of Watertown High School. Jenna and her husband, Kevin, have two grown children – both are LATI grads. In her free time, Jenna enjoys browsing flea markets and anything that involves ‘gettin’ crafty!’

Jered is married to Darci and they have three sons. In his free time, he enjoys boating, fishing, and fixing things with his boys.

Jeremy began his teaching career in the fall of 2009. He was a substitute instructor for the LATI Diesel Technology department for three semesters. In July 2019, Lake Area Tech welcomed Counselor Jessi Whetsel. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Oklahoma State University and Master of Education degree in School Counseling at Northeastern State University (OK). She also is a Licensed Professional Counselor. Previously, she worked at the DaySpring Community Counseling agency (Tulsa, OK) as a community-based counselor and at Bixby High School (Bixby, OK) as a high school counselor. Jessi and her husband recently moved to Watertown from Oklahoma and they have two children together. In her free time, Jessi enjoys reading, spending time with my family and visiting with my friends.

Jessicca manages the Parts Department located in the LATI Automotive Building and is the Administrative Assistant for the Auto, Custom Paint & Fab, and High Performance Engine Machining programs. She came to LATI in 1997 with four years experience at a local Watertown parts house. Jessicca lives in Watertown with her husband and five children. If Jessicca does happen to come across any free time, you may find her out golfing with her family or just staying around the house.

Lake Area Tech welcomed Jocelyn to its Nursing faculty in August 2018. Jocelyn is a 2013 graduate of LATI’s Practical Nursing program. She also earned an Associate’s Degree in Registered Nursing from Southeast Technical Institute in 2015 and, in 2017, she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Sioux Falls. Jocelyn has worked at Prairie Lakes Hospital since 2012 and has experience working in the areas of Medical/Surgical Pediatrics, Critical Care/Telemetry Unit, and the Wound Clinic. She continues to work there on an as needed basis. Jocelyn and her husband, Tanner, have a daughter and a dog. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, shopping, and spending time outside.

Previously, Jodi held positions as a Marketing Professor in the Business Department at Southwest Minnesota State University and as the Director of Marketing at Miller Legal Strategic Planning Centers.  Jodi and her husband, Joe, live and farm/ranch in southwestern Minnesota. They have two grown children. On the farm/ranch, they raise corn, soybeans and are also a part of their son’s purebred Red Angus seedstock operation. In her free time, she enjoys riding and showing cutting horses, playing the guitar, and doing western photography.

John is married to Brittany and has three children, Kaden, Carter, and Dalton.  He enjoys working on his farm, buying and selling farm equipment, old tractors, tractor pulls, camping, and spending time with his family.

He moved to Willow Lake to start is own business. Previously, he was self-employed for 22 years in the field of auto repair. In his free time, he enjoys being with his family and friends. They have lived in Willow Lake for the past 25 years.

Jon’s experience includes positions as a Middle/High School Teacher in the Clark School District, Middle School Teacher in the Montrose School District, Middle School Teacher in the Madison School District, and as Principal for the Henry School District. Jon is married and has two children. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family.

He’s a Minnesota Vikings fan and also cheers for other Minnesota sports teams.He enjoys hunting, all sports, and spending time with family and friends. A 2008 graduate of Lake Area Tech’s Diesel Technology program, Josh joined the LATI team in August 2015 as a Heavy Equipment Operator instructor. Previously, Josh was on active duty in the U.S. Army as a track vehicle repairman for four years, a member of the National Guard for nine years, and worked for Butler machinery for eight years as a heavy equipment technician. Josh lives in Watertown and enjoys hunting, weight lifting, small building projects, gun collecting, and target practice.

Occupational Therapy Assistant

Julie Kalahar, MSOT, OTR/L, FAOTA, is the Director for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Augustana College and a Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of South Dakota. Since graduating she has held various leadership positions within the South Dakota Occupational Therapy Association (SDOTA) organization including president. She has also served as South Dakota Representative to the American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA) Representative Assembly (RA) and a national position in the AOTA RA. Her professional leadership and service history includes serving AOTA and AOTF in many AdHoc committees.  Currently she is the chair of the OTA Honor Society Establishment Committee for the OT Leaders and Legacies Foundation.  She has been awarded the SDOTA OTA/OT Partnership Award twice with OTA co-workers Randy Breske, COTA/L, and Kory Hall, BS, COTA/L.  In 2005 she was the recipient of the Dorothy Anne Elsberry Award of Merit, which is the highest honor awarded by SDOTA, for her continued dedication and work on behalf of the field of occupational therapy. In 2014 AOTA named her to the Roster of Fellows for Exemplary Dedication through Service and Leadership. In 2015 The AOTF named her as a founding member of the Leaders and Legacies Society.

Julie Stevenson joined the team at Lake Area Technical Institute in July 2015 as the Foundation Director and then moved into the role of Business Partner Specialist. In her role, Julie works side by side with industry partners through various workforce development strategies.  Julie has worked in collegiate and health care marketing/public relations and Foundation Director roles in Minnesota and South Dakota for more than 25 years.  She has taught Political Science courses at a collegiate level for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system for 16 years both on campus and online. Julie has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Minnesota, a MS degree in Education from Southwest Minnesota State University and in Political Science from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. Julie and her husband Eric have two sons. Drew and his wife Amie are both CPAs and live in Portland, Oregon. They are expecting their first child (a boy). Blake and his wife Mackenzie live in Sioux Falls.  Blake is a Special Education/Middle School teacher for the Sioux Falls School District and Mackenzie works in marketing and business development.  They have a one-year-old daughter, Raya Blake.

Justin grew up on a multi-generational family farm near Flandreau where they raise 900 acres of corn and soybeans. In his free time, he enjoys working on engines. Whether it’s a tractor, race car, or a snowmobile, he is fascinated. Justin started working at a local engine shop at the age of 14 and worked his way through college at an engine shop in Brookings.

Following graduation, he worked for a John Deere dealership in his hometown of Pierre for 10 years before becoming the head mechanic for Anderson Contractors Inc. in Ft. Pierre. Kasey then joined the LATI staff in August 2013. Kasey’s son is enrolled in LATI’s aviation maintenance program and he also has a 14-year old daughter. In his free time, he enjoys repairing anything for family and friends, hunting, fishing, and competition shooting.

Kelly and her husband, Mike, have four daughters and live in Watertown. In her free time, she enjoys reading, music, photography, and spending time with family and friends.

Kelsi began her duties as the Department Supervisory of the Medical Lab Tech program in August 2019. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD; earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science at the University of South Dakota; and will obtain her Master’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science this fall from the University of North Dakota. Previously, Kelsi was the Microbiology Supervisor at Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron, SD. She recently moved to Watertown from Huron with her husband, Brandon, and their two children: Emma and Bennett. They enjoy going camping and fishing in the summer time and spending time together as a family. She enjoys sports activities such as tennis and basketball, being active, and reading a good book.

Kevin, a 2001 graduate of LATI’s building trades technology program, joined the instructional staff in August 2014. His prior experience includes working as a wall-panel plant manager and as a self-employed contractor. Kim is the Dean of Academics at LATI. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from Northern State University and a Masters Degree in School Administration from Northern State University. Kim taught in both Arlington and the Modern Office Occupations program at LATI prior to spending 17 years as a high school administrator in the Henry, Clark, and Watertown communities. Kim lives in Watertown and has two sons, Casey and Corey.

Occupational Therapy Assistant

Kory, BA, COTA/L, joined the LATI staff in January of 2008, as an instructor and Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. Kory graduated from the OTA program at LATI in 2001 and graduated from Mount Marty College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Selected Studies in 2005. Kory’s previous employment as an Occupational Therapy Assistant has included Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown School District, and Sanford Clinic. Her occupational experiences include: six years of pediatrics, geriatrics, rehabilitation, outpatient/inpatient care and Occupational Medicine. Kory is an active member of the South Dakota Occupational Therapy Association and she holds a national position with the American Occupational Therapy Association. She grew up in Winner, SD, but has called Watertown home for the last 18 years with her husband Greg and their 3 children, Kaylee, Maddie and Gage.

Kris is a graduate of the Medical Assisting Program. She worked in the clinic setting in Watertown for seven years before returning to LATI as an instructor and current department supervisor. In her free time Kris enjoys spending time with her husband and three children.

Kristi is the Director at the LATI Children’s Educare Center. She is a graduate of LATI’s Child Development program and has been employed at LATI Children’s Educare Center since 1991. She works with the toddler age group. Kristi enjoys camping with her husband and son.

Lake Area Tech welcomed Kristina as the Developmental Education instructor in August 2018. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology through American Military University and is currently working on her Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through Walden University. Kristina retired after 15 ½ years as a Dental Assistant in the Air Force. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Marc, and their four children. They enjoy camping, fishing, hiking and working in her garden.

Kristina Pearson joined the Lake Area Tech staff in October 2016 as an admissions representative. She is a 2014 graduate of Lake Area Tech’s Dental Assisting program. She brings a wealth of experience to LATI including roles as a clinical coordinator, certified and registered dental assistant, organizer of athletic recruits as Bemidji State University, and as an assistant building materials manager. Kristina is married to Jason and they have two mischievous dogs, she says. She enjoys travelling and has been to six different countries; she also enjoys gardening, photography, cooking, building furniture, and crafting. She lives in Watertown and is originally from Rochester, MN.

Kristine joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2017 as an administrative assistant for the Diesel and Aviation Maintenance programs. She is a graduate of Watertown High School and attended Moorhead State University. Kristine has also completed several banking classes. Previously, she has worked in the restaurant management, banking, and maintenance garage fields. For the last 20 years, she has been in advertising sales at the Watertown Public Opinion. Kristine has worked with the public all of her life and has extensive customer service experience. She and her husband live in Watertown and she has two grown sons.

LATI welcomed Larin to the medical assisting instructor staff in August of 2012. She is a LATI medical assisting graduate and held lab/clinical positions in Fargo and Watertown before coming to Lake Area Tech. Larin is originally from Watertown and is married. She and her husband have one child. In her free time, she enjoys the lake, relaxing, reading, baking, and spending time with family and friends.

Lee joined the LATI team in June 2014 and is currently the Data Specialist. He retired from the US Army as a Colonel after 27+ years of service. He earned his B.A. from the University of Minnesota, his Master’s from the University of Kansas, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA. Lee and his wife Anne live in Watertown. They have five children and regularly travel on overseas mission trips.

Lee is the Retention/Dual Credit Coordinator and has been with LATI since July 2007. Lee has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of South Dakota, a Masters degree from William Woods University, and has received his Superintendent endorsement from the University of Sioux Falls. Prior to his employment with Lake Area Tech, Lee was a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal and superintendent.

Les joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2019 as a CDL instructor for our Corporate Ed division. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Dakota State University. Les’s experience includes 35 years in the transportation industry and 25 years with his previous employer working as a new hire driver, operations lead, safety coordinator, and driver. In his free time, he enjoys playing racquetball, tennis, kayaking, biking, hiking and staying busy. He lives in Watertown with his wife and has 3 kids and 4 grandchildren.

Lake Area Tech welcomed Levi to the team in August 2019 as the Microbiology Sim Lab Instructor. He is a graduate of LATI’s Medical Lab Tech program. Levi’s experience includes work as an MLT for Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton. In his free time, he enjoys going to the gym, being outside with his dogs, and hanging out with family and friends. Levi and Janelle are expecting their first child.

Lindsey joined the Lake Area Tech Dental Assisting department in August 2016. She has been employed as a general practice dental hygienist for the past six years both in Indiana and South Dakota. While working in general practice, she went back to school to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree to create new opportunities beyond clinical dental hygiene.  She is passionate about oral health and is excited for the opportunity to be a dental educator. Lindsey is married to HPEM instructor Troy, and they have a son, Camden. In her free time, she loves to read, travel, be outdoors, and spend time with her family and friends.

Lloyd joined the Lake Area Tech team in April 2011. He spent his career in the educational system teaching science and coaching football, basketball, and track for Wilmot, Hamlin, and Watertown. Lloyd is a native of Castlewood and an SDSU grad. In his free time, he enjoys golfing and attending athletic events, especially his grandchildren’s. Lloyd is married to Jan and together they have five children and 17 grandchildren.

Lorna joined the staff at LATI in January 2013. She held roles as the TAA Grants Project Officer and Educational Technology Specialist before moving to financial services. Prior to joining the team at Lake Area Tech, Lorna worked as a tech coordinator/computer instructor for the Waverly, Watertown, and Henry school districts. In addition, she has worked for Still Waters, Inc., HR Block, Daktronics, and was a co-owner of Lone Pine BBQ. Lorna graduated from high school in Missouri and received Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration and Business Education from Dakota State University in Madison, SD. In addition, she earned a Master’s degree in Educational Technology w/ Technical Systems Specialization. Lorna is originally from Doland, SD.

LuAnn is the Director of Student Services at LATI. Her responsibilities include marketing, student services, and recruiting. She has been with LATI since 1987 when she began her career as an Admissions Representative. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota. Prior to her employment with Lake Area Tech, LuAnn was a high school counselor.

Lynn began his duties as the Food Service Director at LATI in July 2019. He brings 21 years of experience in the retail food service industry and 15 years of experience in the wholesale food service industry. Lynn earned an Associate of Arts degree in Business Marketing and Management from Northeast Community College. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, biking, golfing, and gardening.

Mark graduated from the Engineering/Architectural Drafting Program at Lake Area Technical Institute in 1983. After graduation, he was employed by Telelect in Watertown as a mechanical drafts person. He left Telelect and joined a company in Sioux Falls where he spent five years training area businesses in the use of AutoCAD. In 1993, he joined the team at Lake Area Tech as an instructor.

Marsi has worked for the LATI Bookstore since 1988. She is the textbook manager and enjoys working with the students and instructors. She is a graduate of Watertown High School and LATI. Marsi and her husband live in Watertown.

Mary Redlin

General Ed

Mary Rose teaches Econ 105 online and Leadership in the Global Workplace. After graduating from the LATI Medical Assisting program, she went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities and an MBA from the University of Denver. She has management experience with Pitney Bowes, AT&T, and Lucent Technologies. Mary has owned her own consulting business and has worked in Uganda, South Sudan, East Timor, Rwanda, Namibia and Afghanistan. She spent four years in Uganda as a United Nations volunteer. She received her 200 hour yoga teacher training certification in New Zealand in 2015 and became a Reiki Master in April 2018.  She teaches meditation and energy healing at her business, Reiki with Mary. In his free time, he enjoys working with his 3D printer.

Serving almost 30 years as an Air Force officer, Mike is a 1977 graduate of Watertown High School who has been an instructor and administrator for the United States Air Force Academy and Harvard University. Mike has a B.S. in Computer Science from the United States Air Force Academy, a Masters of Science in Numerical Analysis from Purdue University, and was a National Defense Fellow to Harvard University.

Michael joined the Lake Area Tech team in August 2018 as an English instructor. Most recently, he was an adjunct instructor at Viterbo University in Wisconsin and he also teaches online for San Juan College. Michael has a Master’s Degree in English and an MFA in Creative Writing. In his free time, he enjoys sports, language, and betting on sports.

Michele joined the Lake Area Staff in April of 2013.  Michele and her husband, Jeff, are both LATI graduates and they have two daughters, both also LATI graduates. One is an MLT in Sioux Falls and the other is an RN at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System in Watertown.  Since becoming empty nesters, Michele and her husband decided to move from the city to the country.  Michele enjoys the farm life and most of the challenges that have been presented to her.  She stays busy taking care of her gardens and flowers, chasing critters away from her garden and flowers, trying to keep away from the critters that catch her off guard, and trying not to hit critters on her drive to work and home. In her spare time (which is very little since moving to the country) Michele likes to float in her pool, sit in her hammock and read, hang out by her creek, or obsess over the weather and check the forecast for blizzards.

Michelle joined the Lake Area Tech team in October 2017 as an Office Assistant. Prior to coming to LATI, she worked at Verifications, Inc., Andor, the Post Office, and at Sparton until her family moved to South Shore where she stayed home and managed everyone there, she says. Michelle is a graduate of Lake Area Tech’s  Financial Services Program/Accounting option. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her kids, husband, family, and friends on their acreage outside of South Shore. She also likes watching movies and listening to music.

Michelle brings a wealth of experience to the Educare Center including prior work as a nanny, preschool teacher, daycare provider and work as a paraprofessional. She is a graduate of Watertown High School and the Universtiy of South Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with an emphasis in early childhood. In her free time, Michelle enjoys spending time with her husband, two daughters, and extended family. She likes to travel, camp, and cheer on her daughters in their activities.

Mike came to LATI as a diesel lab aide in August 2013 and is now a diesel instructor. He is a graduate of Waubay High School and Lake Area Tech. He served in the Army from 1973-1976. His experience includes oil field construction, truck and heavy equipment operator/mechanic, truck mechanic, 21 years as an independent trucker, and he is the owner of K & M Service and Repair. Mike lives in South Shore and is ‘owned’ by a black lab – Gunner, and a chocolate lab – Hunter. In his free time, he enjoys restoring old tractors, growing potatoes, and restoring old pickup trucks.

Mindy is the simulation lab coordinator at LATI. She joined the staff in February 2014. Mindy is a graduate of South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She has been a registered nurse for more than 13 years – eight years as a nurse at the patient bedside and five years in an instructor role. Mindy lives in Wallace with her husband and four children. She enjoys reading, walking, and hanging out with her family.

Previously, Mostafa worked at a programming company in Iran as a developer and then at 3M in Brookings, SD, as a packer and assistant operator. Nicki is the librarian at Lake Area Tech. In addition to her role as librarian, she also teaches gen ed classes and heads the All-Campus Read committee. Nicki joined the LATI team in 2006 after teaching composition for two years and being a journalist for one year. When she’s not at work, Nicki likes to read, write, camp, and fish. She also likes participating in her book club with friends and LATI co-workers. Nicki is married and has three children. She is a native of Sioux Center, IA, and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Briar Cliff University and her Master’s degree from Minnesota State University.

Nicole is a graduate of the Lake Area Dental Assisting Program. From there she moved and worked in Lincoln, Nebraska while attending UNL. She relocated to the Twin Cities to further advance her career working for both dental companies and dental offices. She has extensive experience in cosmetic dentistry and dental technology, of which she also instructs other dental personnel. In her spare time, Nicole enjoys reading, spending time outdoors (even in the winter!) and laughing with her family and friends.

Nicole joined the team at Lake Area Tech in February 2019 as a Medical Lab Tech instructor. She is a 2017 alumna of the program. Since graduation, Nicole has been working at Prairie Lakes Hospital and Lake Area Tech. Prior to that, she had a variety of jobs including waitressing, building medical devices, and working at Dakota Tube. She has lived in Watertown for most of her life and has three beautiful girls who are very active in sports and orchestra. In her free time, she likes to read.

Patrick earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Concordia College. He is married and has three children. In his free time, Patrick enjoys nature, citizen science, and art.

Patty began as the department supervisor for the Practical Nursing Program in May 2012. She has been with the Practical Nursing Program and LATI since October 1989. She received her B.S. in nursing from SDSU and her Master of Science/Leadership in Health Care Systems with an education focus from Regis University of Denver. Patty’s most recent teaching duties include fundamental nursing, basic skills and advanced skills labs, obstetrics lectures and clinicals and leadership and legal/ethical issues. In her spare time, Patty enjoys living in the country with her husband and five children. Patty enjoys horseback riding, watching sports and collecting antiques.

Rhonda joined Lake Area Technical Institute in October 2004 as a Clinical Practical Nursing Instructor. She has worked in a variety of settings, from a small hospital to larger facilities and was also a manager of a recovery room in a same day surgery center. Rhonda graduated from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND, in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She obtained her Master of Science degree in Leadership in Health Care Systems with an education focus from Regis University in Denver in 2009. Most recently, she earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Chamberlain College of Nursing in Downers Grove, IL. Rhonda is married and has three children. Any spare time is spent camping, riding motorcycle, and helping her husband run his business.

Robyn joined the LATI practical nursing instructor staff in August of 2012. Prior to that, she taught nursing care clinicals for LATI and SDSU. She also worked as an emergency room nurse at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown and holds ACLS, PALS, and TNCC certifications. Her education includes a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Presentation College in Aberdeen and a master’s degree in nursing education from Kaplan University. Robyn and her husband Terry have three children. She enjoys traveling, running, and family time. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and Alpha Beta Kappa Honors Society.

Rosemary graduated from Watertown Business University. Originally from Castlewood, she moved to Watertown in 1970. She worked at Production Credit Association for 12 years, then decided to become a full time homemaker and raise her two daughters. In January 2003, Rosemary joined the Cosmetology staff as receptionist. Her husband, Roger, farms west of Watertown. Rosemary’s hobbies include reading, long walks, and watching her daughters’ softball games.

Previously, he was employed at the Ford dealership before joining an independent transmission shop. Ryan McPeek

IT Technician

In August 2018, Lake Area Tech welcomed Ryan as an IT Technician I. He earned a degree in System Administration from Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls. Previously, Ryan worked as an IT Tech at Dakota Tube, Inc. His duties there included working on computers, printer, and servers. In his free time, Ryan enjoys playing video games, building computers, and working around his house. He lives in Watertown.

Nursing

Samantha joined the LATI team in August 2013. She is a 2010 graduate of South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. In 2016, she received a Masters of Science in Nursing Degree from Kaplan University and is currently attending South Dakota State University for her PhD in Nursing. She worked a short time at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre then moved to Watertown where she continues to work on the Medical/Surgical/Pediatric floor at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System. Samantha is married and has two daughters, Everlie and Ellesyn, and one son, Griffin. In her free time, she enjoys watching movies, crafting, sewing, and spending time with friends and family.​

Sarah started teaching psychology at LATI in January of 2014. She worked as a mental health counselor before that. She attended Concordia College in Moorhead and received her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Bethel University in St Paul. Sarah lives in Watertown with her husband and loves biking, time at the lake, decorating and being a piano teacher.

Scott joined the Lake Area Tech team in January 2015 as a diesel lab instructor. Before coming to LATI, Scott held positions as a diesel technician, carpenter, farmer, and SDDOT maintenance technician. He is a graduate of NDSSS in Diesel Technology. Scott is married to his wife of 28 years, Brenda. They have two daughters and two grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and farming. He and Brenda live on a farm near Peever.

Energy Operations

Scott graduated from O’Gorman High in 1982. He earned his degree in biology at Augustana College and played college football for the Vikings. He finished his master’s degree in the spring of 2011 from the University of Sioux Falls. Scott was a biology instructor and assistant football coach at O’Gorman for 16 years. He was a science instructor at Watertown High School for seven years and was the head football coach as well as an assistant track coach for the Watertown Arrows. Scott enjoys hunting, fishing, riding his Indian motorcycle, and wood carving.

Seth, a graduate of Hamlin High School, joined the LATI team in December 2015. His work experience includes positions as a painter at Terex, and also in maintenance at Red River Energy. Seth is engaged and has one child. He lives in Watertown and enjoys spending time with family and working on projects with his family.

Shane is the Director of Support Operations, Bookstore Manager, and Food Service Manager. He has an AAS degree from the Marketing/Management/Sales program at Lake Area Tech. Previously, Shane spent five years working in the admissions department at LATI.

Director of Outreach

Lake Area Tech welcomed Shane Swenson as its Business Partner Specialist in July 2016. In 2018, he moved to the position of Director of Outreach. Shane obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing from Northern State University in Aberdeen. Prior to joining us, he spent 11 years in retail management and most recently was a manager at First Dakota Title. Shane has three children Keslar, Kutler, Kinzley and his wife, Denise, is a teacher at Jefferson elementary. His personal interests include hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Shawn is a media specialist in LATI’s Innovation Center. Shawn began his career at Lake Area Tech in July 2008. He designs and updates the LATI website, creates videos for marketing and live events, and he keeps up on new technology and trends for instructors. Shawn is married to Angie and they have two boys. In his free time, Shawn enjoys camping and fishing. Shawn is originally from Hendricks, MN, and he is a 2002 graduate of Minnesota West Community and Technical College with an A.A.S degree in Graphic Design.

Sheila Gainor joined the Lake Area Tech team as an Administrative Assistant in July 2016. Sheila earned a degree in the Medical Administrative Assistant program at Moorhead Technical College. Previously, she held positions in the Assistant Principal’s Office at Watertown High School, the Financial Aid Office at LATI, and in the Business Office at Blue Valley School District. In her free time, Sheila enjoys reading, walking, trying new recipes, and spending time with family and friends.

Sheila started working at Educare Center in August of 2003. She received a degree in Early Childhood from SDSU. During her spare time she works with her husband on their dairy farm near Florence.

Sherray joined the LATI team in June 2014 as the TAA Grant Instructional Designer and has since moved to the General Education teaching faculty. She is a graduate of Northern State University with a degree in English Education and Spanish. Prior to Lake Area Tech, Sherray taught English and Spanish for the last 20 years in Clark. In her free time, she likes to garden, camp, and boat with her family. They live on a farm near Raymond.

Stephanie Danielsen

Student Support and Equity Coordinator

Stephanie joined the Lake Area Tech team in July 2019 as the Student Support and Equity Coordinator. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and a Master’s Degree in Student Affairs and School Counseling at South Dakota State University. She is currently working on a Doctorate Degree in Adult & Higher Education Administration at the University of South Dakota. Previously, she worked in Multicultural Affairs and New Student Orientation at SDSU and spent 17 years as a school counselor in the Emery, Hanson, Garretson, Deuel, and Watertown School Districts. Stephanie’s family includes her husband Jeff; son Riley, a graduate of SDSU currently living in Sioux Falls; son Brodey, a senior at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois; and daughter Sadie, a senior at Watertown High School.  In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing tennis, continuing education, and traveling.

After graduating in 1981 from Watertown High School, Steve served full-time for the SD National Guard in Watertown as a Career Counselor retiring in July 1999. He spent five years as a financial services representative for Farmers Insurance Group before partnering to build and open a local camper dealership. Steve joined LATI as the Corporate Education Coordinator in August 2009 and enjoys assisting business and industries meet their training needs.

Aviation Maintenance Technology

 

In August 2019, Steve began his duties as an Aviation Maintenance Instructor at Lake Area Tech. He is a graduate of that program and brings experience working for Hilltop Aerial, Inc. and Olivia Flying Service, and also with his business, Wheatland Aviation, LLC. He and his wife, Nikki, live in Clark with their son, Christopher.  They enjoy hunting, fishing, camping, riding motorcycles and being involved in the aviation community.  He is very passionate about his business, Wheatland Aviation LLC, located at the Clark County Airport in Clark, SD.

Heavy Equipment Operator

The Heavy Equipment Operator program welcomed back Steve Henningsgaard in January 2017 as an instructor. Steve is a familiar face as he taught in the program in its first couple of years. He brings a wealth of experience to the program with 25 years as a heavy equipment operator and foreman. He also has experience with GPS. Steve has been married to his wife, Carla, for 32 years and they have eight children and three (soon to be four) grandchildren. He has lived in Canby, MN, all of his life and enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, and traveling.

Susan joined the Lake Area Tech team in May 2017 as the Campus Accounts representative. She is a graduate of Lake Area Tech with degrees in Human Services Technician and Medical Assisting. Prior to coming to LATI, Susan was employed in the Human Services field for 10 years and in the Medical Assisting field for four years. Her family includes husband, Jason, and daughters, Deklynn and McKynlee. In her free time, Susan enjoys being outside, spending time with family, watching NASCAR/Twins baseball/Minnesota Wild, camping deer hunting, working with cattle, rummaging and going to junk fairs.

Administrative Assistant/Ag-Energy

The Agriculture and Energy Departments at LATI welcomed Tera in August 2017 as an administrative assistant. She is a graduate of Watertown High School and earned a degree in Music Therapy from Colorado State University. In 2016, she completed her Music Education certification. Previously, Tera taught K-12 band and vocal music in Henry, SD (3 years); taught K-8 vocal music in Emery, SD/K-12 vocal music in Alexandria, SD (1 year); took 6 years off to raise her four kids; taught K-12 vocal music at Bridgewater-Emery School (5 years); taught K-12 band and vocal music in Florence, SD (2 years); and taught K-12 vocal music at Clark School (1 year). Tera and her husband, Shawn, live in Watertown and have two sons, Maxwell and Marqus, and two daughters, Makenna and Mattisyn. They also have a dog and two cats. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, singing, writing music, playing the piano and guitar, participating in various theatre productions, painting, doing crafts, and baking.

Computer Information Systems

Terri has a BA degree in Mathematics Education and Computer Science from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, and a MS degree in Computer Education and Technology from Dakota State University in Madison, SD. Terri began her teaching career in South Dakota with the Todd County School District on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Mission, SD, where she taught high school Mathematics and Computer Science for three years and then was the district Technology Coordinator for four years. She spent seven years as the Technology Coordinator for the De Smet School District. Terri was awarded the TIE Technology Leadership Award in 1997 and the South Dakota Distance Learning Local Leadership Award in 2004 for her work with the Cisco Networking Academy Blended Distance Learning Program. She currently holds the following industry certifications: Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW), A+, Network+, and iNet+. She is also a certified Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Terri joined the CIS staff in the Fall of 2005 and is now the department supervisor.

Terri joined the Lake Area Tech staff in February 2012 as the TAA Grants Manager. Before joining LATI, Terri was a Project Director for the Title II Part A Grant, School Improvement Specialist at Northeast Educational Services Coop, and a Program Representative with the SD Department of Education. She is a graduate of Hamlin High School, Huron University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, and SDSU with a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Terri lives in Clark and enjoys gardening, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Diesel Technology

Terry is a 1983 graduate of Watertown High School and a 1993 graduate of LATI’s Engineering/Architectural Drafting program. Prior to joining the Lake Area Tech team, he worked for the SD Department of Transportation and Aason Engineering in Watertown as a civil engineering technician. Terry also worked at Lauen’s Hot Rods in Watertown as a fabricator and body man. He began his career in 2002 as an instructor in the Eng/Arch Drafting department. In 2011, he began teaching general education courses, and in 2012, he began teaching in the Custom Paint & Fab department, and in 2017, the Diesel department. Terry and his wife have three sons. In his free time, he enjoys restoring old cars and attending car and motorcycle shows.

Automotive Technology

Terry is a LATI automotive technology graduate and joined the staff as an instructor in August 2013. Before coming to Lake Area Tech, he was an automotive line tech team leader and spent 10 years in the industry in both a dealership and independent automotive service. He served on safety and customer satisfaction committees for the dealership and also led and organized daily job tasks for teams of automotive technicians. Terry also has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science. In his free time, he enjoys working out, riding his motorcycle, and experiencing new things such as different cultures and places.

Thomas Dunn

Business Partner Specialist

Thomas joined the Lake Area Tech team as a Business Partner Specialist in June 2018. He is a 2005 graduate of Brookings High School.  After graduation, Thomas moved to Texas where he worked in sales for the King Ranch until he enlisted in the United States Air Force.  He served as a non-commissioned officer and also worked for Homeland Security (TSA).  In 2016, Thomas returned to South Dakota and attended Lake Area Technical Institute where he graduated with his degree in Building Trades Technology in May of 2018. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and camping.

Automotive Technology

Thor graduated from Rapid City Central High School in 1993 and from the Automotive Technology program at Lake Area Tech in 1996 with T-Ten training. He has worked for General Motors and Toyota dealers as a general line tech. At LATI, Thor teaches first-year classes including Brakes, Steering, Suspension & Alignment, and Drive Axles. Thor is master-certified through ASE and Toyota. In his free time, he enjoys hunting and fishing – everything and everywhere! He joined the Lake Area Tech staff in 2010.

Tiffany joined the Lake Area Tech team in January 2019 as part of the Educare staff. She earned her degree in Human Services Tech/Child Development from LATI and brings experience working with children including assisting in her mother’s classroom, running an after school care program, working in a daycare, and babysitting. Tiffany lives in Watertown and loves spending time with family, friends, her boyfriend, and her dog. She enjoys traveling, camping, being at the lake fishing, and going to stock car races with her dad and brother.

Electronic Systems Technology

Tim graduated from Watertown High School in 1974 and from LATI in 1976. After graduation, he worked at Burghardt Amateur Center in Watertown repairing amateur and commercial radio equipment for 24 years. He started teaching Electronics and Computer Hardware for the Lake Area Multi-District in 2000 and remained there until 2008 when he started in LATI’s Electronics program. He is A+ Certified in computer repair, certified in network copper cabling and fiber optics and has a FCC First Class Radio Telephone License.

Data Specialist/Executive Assistant

Tina began her career at Lake Area Tech in 1992 in the admissions department and is currently a Data Specialist/Executive Assistant. She is a graduate of LATI and is originally from Brookings. Tina has two grown children, one granddaughter and one grandson. In her free time, she enjoys warm weather activities, reading, attend concerts and college athletic events.

 

Todd Bretschneider

Custom Paint & Fabrication

Todd graduated from high school in Minneota, MN, and is the department supervisor for CPF. After attending the Ridgewater College Auto Body program, he gained experience working in both collision and speciality shops. Prior to coming to LATI, Todd owned an auto body business with his father for 23 years. He is married to a Watertown girl and has two sons. Todd and his sons are custom car and Harley Davidson Motorcycle buffs and enjoy Nascar and drag racing.

Tom is an instructor of several classes in the Business Associate program at LATI and is also the BSA department supervisor. A graduate of Watertown High School, Tom went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations and Marketing from North Dakota State University. Prior to working at LATI, Tom traveled the country as the exhibit manager for the Bodies Human exhibition. In Tom’s free time he can be found on the golf course, playing guitar, or enjoying the outdoors.

Aviation Maintenance Technology

Tony was introduced to flying by his uncle in Graceville, MN, where he grew up and helped on his father’s farm. With a knack for being mechanical and loving the wind in his face, an ultra light was purchased and “tested to its limits” for years to come. After high school, Tony attended and graduated from Wilmar Votech studying and working in diesel mechanics until he discovered his true passion, aviation. It was then that he attended Lake Area Tech from 1987 to 1989 studying airframe and power-plant and graduating with the D. D. Miller award. Immediately after graduation, Tony was employed by Island Airways out of Charlevoix, MI, which served as an air taxi and charter company for Beaver Island and the surrounding areas in northern Michigan. Tony was the Director of Maintenance and serviced a fleet of four Britten Norman Islanders, Cessna and Piper Aircraft. During Tony’s time with Island Airways, he was also instrumental in arranging a fly-in from the “Yankee Lady,” a B-17G WWII bomber, which opened eyes and educated people to a touch of aviation from our past. Until recently moving to South Dakota with his wife, Tony also enjoyed servicing aircraft in his surrounding communities and was an active member in the local flying club.

Foundation Executive Director

Tracy  joined the Lake Area Tech team as the Foundation Executive Director in November 2017.  She brings a wealth of experience as she has worked for non-profit organizations over the past 15 years.  Most recently, she was the Watertown Area United Way Executive Director for nearly 13 years and prior to that, she worked for the Health Care Compliance Association & Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics in Minneapolis, MN.

Tracy is a graduate of LATI, earning an AAS degree in Computer Programming. She also graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Arts and Science.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her kids and watching them at their various activities.  She is active in the community and likes to volunteer for other organizations. Her hobbies include running.  To date, she has completed several 5ks, 10ks, a few half marathons, and a Ragnar Relay Race.

Med/Fire Rescue

Troy is the Department Supervisor for Lake Area Tech’s Med/Fire Rescue program. He’s been with LATI since 2005. Troy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and Geography from the University of Minnesota at Mankato. His experience includes 24 years as a Lieutenant Firefighter/Paramedic at Watertown Fire Rescue and is now retired from WFR. He is the father of four girls and lives in Watertown. In his free time, he enjoys golf, hunting, fishing, anything on the water, or anything that keeps him active.

High Performance Engine Machining

Troy is a graduate of Lake Area Tech’s Precision Machining program. He joined the staff in January 2013 as an instructor for the new High Performance Engine Machining program. Previously, Troy worked as an engine machinist at CNC Motorsports and at Johnson Machine. Troy is married to Dental Assisting instructor, Lindsey, and they have a son, Camden. In his free time, he enjoys dirt track racing and snow/water skiing. Troy grew up in Pierre.

Custodian

Waylon has been a Lake Area Tech employee since December of 1999. Currently, he works the night shift in the Ag building where he cleans and performs maintenance duties. Waylon is an avid NASCAR fan and cheers on Dale Jr. He’s been to NASCAR races in Kansas City and is looking forward to attending one in Richmond this fall. He also enjoys summer fishing, riding his Harley Street Glide, learning more about his newest hobby – photography, and spoiling his nephew, Carter.

The Diesel Tech Department welcomed William in August 2016 as an instructor. He earned his degree in Diesel Technology from NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND. William has 15 years of experience as a Diesel Mechanic for Butler Machinery Company in Sioux Falls where he worked on all heavy equipment and spec shop areas, then two years’ experience as a farm mechanic for a goose farm by Sisseton. William lives in Sisseton with his wife, Jennifer, and two kids: Mary and Jackson. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with his family, taking his son to his father’s farm, and helping out there when needed.

Zachary Drees joined the Lake Area Tech family in October 2016 as an IT Technician. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems at Northern State University. While attending NSU, he worked in the Technology Department. After graduating, he moved to Watertown to work at a-i Computer Solutions. In his free time, Zachary enjoys golfing, hunting, skating/hockey, and video games from time to time.
