Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Inhalation Sedation Certification Course

When: June 25, 2026. This 12-hour course includes an online interactive lecture component to be completed before attending the 6-hour hands-on portion held on campus on June 25.

Where: Lake Area Tech Dental Assisting classroom and clinic

This hands-on 12 hour course is designed to introduce and certify the dental professional in Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Sedation. The course was developed in conjunction with the training requirements for the South Dakota Board of Dentistry. 

The course information will be delivered by instructor-led lectures via computer and in person; as well as, hands-on training in a dental office. There will be a paper test at the conclusion of the course and a certificate will be given up on completion of the course. Participation is limited to 6 students.

Home Study Dental Radiology Continuing Education

The programs consist of radiology safety and x-ray production. All programs consist of a CD and a worksheet. After completing the program, a short quiz is taken and returned to the school and then a certificate will be sent out. Each section is $30 and is approved by the SD Board of Dentistry for 1 hour of credit. Email Nicole Pahl at nicole.pahl@lakeareatech.edu to have packets sent to you.

Intro to Basic Concepts in Dental Radiology

This 16-hour course is designed to introduce the participant to basic concepts in dental radiation, including its nature, generation, and biologic effects. Course materials will become available beginning June 11 and will include online instructional content to be completed prior to the hands-on clinical portion of the course. The primary focus will be on exposing radiographs safely, accurately, and achieving consistent results. This course meets the requirements of the South Dakota State Board of Dentistry. Specific objectives are to:

  • Understand the nature and behavior of x-rays.
  • Discuss the basics of radiology and biological effects.
  • Understand patient and operator safety, including infection control and radiation protection measures.
  • Understand South Dakota State Board and federal regulations related to dental radiography.
  • Understand and apply proper exposure techniques for dental imaging.
  • Prevent, identify, and correct common exposure technique errors.
  • Acquire digital intraoral and extraoral radiographic images.
  • Conduct quality analysis and evaluation of radiographic images.
  • Dates: June 25-26, 2026 (coursework available starting June 11th)

Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) – Verification of Skills

  • Dates: Online modules start in March and the hands-on portion will be June 1st– 5th, 2026.

  • Fee: $2,000

This course has been approved by the South Dakota Board of Dentistry, to satisfy the educational requirement leading to “verification of competency.” There is no diploma with this program and no transcripts for the course. This course is not transferrable to other states or schools.

1. Students must complete the online modules with 80% or better competency prior to the hands-on portion on campus. Completion of the entire course is required for a verification of competency. See Qualifications and Requirements link below.

2. Reopened exams and retakes are granted, however, there will be a $100.00 fee per reopened exam and/or retakes granted. Students will not be allowed to move onto next module until previous module has been passed. See Qualifications and Requirements link below.
