WATERTOWN, SD – Lake Area Technical College is offering 11 certifications in high-demand fields to eligible applicants through the South Dakota UpSkill program. The certifications would be of little or no cost to the student. UpSkill is a partnership between the South Dakota Board of Technical Education and the Department of Labor and Regulation.

The certificates are available for people who have obstacles to overcome in securing employment. Eligibility criteria vary and can include: being laid off from a job, being low income, or having a disability.

At Lake Area Tech, certifications are offered in Accounting, Agriculture, Banking, Community Health Worker, Emergency Medical Technician, Human Resources, Manufacturing, Networking, Precision Machining, Programming and Welding. Certifications will take one to two semesters to complete and most are offered online or on campus. The deadline to apply is August 9 and courses begin August 18. Some have a spring semester start option.

To enroll in one of the UpSkill certification programs at Lake Area Tech, participants will first apply for admission online at www.lakeareatech.edu. Once determined eligible, the participant’s information will be forwarded to the DLR and he or she will be assigned a Case Manager, who will provide student support for the remainder of the course of study.
