UpSkill Certifications at Lake Area Tech

Have you been deemed ‘dislocated’ by the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) after filing for reemployment assistance? Are you interested in learning a new high-demand skill that would cost little or nothing? The new UpSkill program may be just what you’re looking for!

UpSkill is a program that offers online-only certifications in several high-demand career fields. It is the result of a $2.2 million request by the South Dakota Board of Technical Education for CARES Act funds. CARES Act fund dollars were earmarked by Governor Noem as education-stabilization funds to support initiatives related to COVID-19 workforce impacts. The request is in collaboration with the state’s four technical colleges and the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR).

Online Certificates

South Dakota’s four technical colleges have developed several, primarily 18-credit, online-only certificate programs offered in a variety of high-demand career fields.  All certificates were built using existing academic programs/curriculum and will be approved by the Higher Learning Commission and the Board of Technical Education. The certificates will be added to the Eligible Training Provider list (ETPL), in partnership with the DLR.

Timeline

Applications are being accepted now and online course instruction begins in August 2020. Students can expect to earn their certificates by May 2021.

Cost

Affordability is a key element of the UpSkill program and, in many cases, students will earn a certificate at no cost. The education stabilization funds awarded by the Governor will support tuition costs.
