Lake Area Tech’s Registered Nursing program is designed for Licensed Practical Nurses ready to take the next step in patient care. This 11-month, full-time program builds on your LPN experience, expanding your role, responsibility, and clinical decision-making.
The curriculum combines theory, clinicals, labs, and simulation to prepare you for a broader scope of care. You’ll train to assess, plan, and manage patient outcomes across a variety of healthcare settings, working with greater independence and accountability.
Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam and enter the workforce as Registered Nurses. The program also creates a pathway to continue your education toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Admission is competitive and limited each fall. Applicants must hold a current, unencumbered LPN license and meet academic and program requirements.

Registered Nursing E-Degree
The hybrid/online RN program follows the same structure as the on-campus option, combining online coursework with required on-campus clinical, lab, and simulation experiences. Students typically attend campus for short, scheduled sessions once or twice per semester.
This option is designed for students who need flexibility but are prepared for the intensity of the program. The curriculum remains full-time and academically demanding.
Acceptance Criteria
Admission is based on a combination of academic performance and readiness, including:
- ATI Comprehensive Predictor NCLEX-PN Score
- GPA (2.75 or higher preferred)
- Completion of prerequisite coursework
- Personal statement
- Letter of references
Some applicants may be invited to participate in an interview process.

Please note: if a prospective student has been convicted of a felony, he/she could possibly not meet the qualifications to write the licensing exam.
Admission Criteria
Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Lake Area Technical College Registered Nursing Program to receive a letter of acceptance. Admission is contingent upon the successful completion of an accredited LPN program and the NCLEX PN licensure exam. A student interview with the admissions team and Nursing Department Supervisor may be requested.
Applicants must meet the following criteria to determine entrance into the Lake Area Technical College Registered Nursing program:
- High School diploma or GED.
- GPA from the LPN school/program at 2.75 or higher. The LPN program attended must be approved
by the State Board of Nursing from the state in which the school resides. - Official transcripts from all institutions attended sent directly from the institution to LATC.
- Transferrable coursework completed with a C or higher. Science courses should not be greater than
seven years old. (Exceptions may be granted if the candidate is a practicing LPN). - A statement from the student requesting admission with an explanation of how the student plans to
be successful in the RN program “Admission Enlightenment Letter”. - Provide a current employer, current faculty or a former faculty to be a reference. Upon submission
of the form the reference will be asked to provide an emailed letter of reference directly to the admissions department at LATC. - If a student has previously been in a Registered Nursing Program other than LATC, they must
produce a letter of recommendation from the school in which they left. The student must have left
in good academic and moral standing. Each student will be viewed on an individual basis. - Additionally, all currently licensed LPNs must:
- a. Complete the “ATI Comprehensive Predictor NCLEX-PN” or provide results of this exam within the last three years. This exam is a 180-item assessment of the student’s comprehension and mastery of basic principles including fundamentals of nursing, pharmacology, adult medical surgical nursing, maternal newborn care, mental health nursing, nursing care of children, nutrition, and management. The exam must be completed by the application deadline. The exam is offered at Lake Area Tech Monday through Friday, except on holidays. Check with the Admissions Office for those dates. A photo ID must be presented to take the exam. Applicants are required to set up an account through the ATI testing website: https://www.atitesting.com/. Applications received after the priority deadline may still test. The cost of the exam must be paid with a credit/debit card at the time of testing. See website for current cost of the exam.
- b. Hold a current unencumbered LPN license.
- c. Show proof of nursing work experience within 12 months
- Upon admission students will be required to show proof of immunizations, physical examination,
current CPR certification, and background check.
The nursing faculty admissions committee has the right to (1) approve, (2) admit conditionally, or (3) deny admission to any student based on (a) unsatisfactory academic performance in their previous nursing courses, (b) a negative referral based the student’s ethical or moral behavior, or (c) unsafe practice. *Qualified applicants should be aware that program class sizes are limited, which may delay acceptance into the program.
Application Process
Applicants of the Lake Area Tech Registered Nursing program must follow the application process steps as outlined below to ensure each of the steps is completed correctly.
- Apply to Lake Area Technical College (with the Apply Now link). Choose option “RN” for the traditional classroom setting or “RNO” for the RN eDegree option.
- Once you have applied to LATC, you will receive an email with a link to complete the RN admission form. You will be prompted to upload the necessary documents listed on the “Acceptance Criteria” sheet.
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended should be sent directly from the institution to LATC.
- Register to take the ATI Comprehensive Predictor NCLEX-PN by contacting the admissions office at LATC. Current LPN students at LATC and those who have taken this exam within the last three years are exempt from this. Those who have taken it within the last three years must send proof of their results to admissions@lakeareatech.edu.
- Verify completed application with the Admission Assistant at 1-800-657- 4344 Ext. 290.
Early Acceptance
Early acceptance (a year in advance) is possible. Please review the following bullet points. This is not an automatic acceptance, applicants’ files will be reviewed as they are submitted.
- The early acceptance status is granted based on the applicant’s GPA and the need to complete generals (must have at least three general education courses to complete).
- The applicant may use the acceptance status a year before the RN program begins to complete those generals.
- The applicant must successfully complete all attempted generals to keep acceptance status
- We will fill up to 12 early admitted students in each cohort.
