Photography & Media

The Photography & Media option at Lake Area Tech combines creative development with real-world application. Over 20 months, you’ll build technical skills across multiple photography styles while learning how to edit, refine, and present your work professionally.

Training includes advanced photo editing, digital imaging, and practical experience working with clients and projects. You’ll also learn how to market and distribute your work, with insight from visiting professional photographers and industry experiences that connect classroom learning to real opportunities.

The program includes core business coursework, giving you the foundation to operate your own photography business or work within a larger organization.

An internship or capstone project is required, allowing you to build experience and a portfolio before graduation.

Graduates pursue careers in portrait photography, commercial and product work, photojournalism, studio operations, and digital media, with the option to apply their skills toward independent or entrepreneurial ventures.

The equipment listed below is required for success in the Photography/Media program.

Please also review the recommended optional tools to help you prepare for a professional career postgraduation. Your gear may vary depending on your career goals, and you will regularly discuss those with your instructor. Adjustments to the list may be made on an individual basis.

Required Equipment

  1. Camera
    • A professional full-frame DSLR or mirrorless camera is required with video capabilities: Must record at 1920×1080 @ 24fps and 1280×720 @ 60fps, with an external mic port.
    • Examples:
      • DSLR: Canon 6D Mark II, Nikon D780
      • Mirrorless: Canon EOS R5/R6, Nikon Z6 II/III, Z7 II
      • Alternate brands may be approved if they meet requirements.
  2. Computer
    • Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 2 $1500 (available via LATC Bookstore).
    • Other laptops may be approved. Minimum requirements: Win 11, i7 processor, 32 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, GPU – NVIDIA RTX™ A500 4GB.
  3. Camera Bag
    • Choose one that fits your camera, 3 lenses, and accessories. Consider weather resistance if shooting outdoors.
  4. Software

  • LATC Bookstore offers a lease-to-own program for the ThinkPad.
  • Recommended retailers: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon. B&H Photo Video and Adorama offer student discount programs, which may help reduce your equipment costs. We encourage you to explore both options.

Uncrewed Aerial Systems (Drones) Certificate

Photography & Media+ Uncrewed Aerial Systems (Drones) Certificate

August start only.

There is a fast-growing demand for workers who can operate and maintain uncrewed aircraft systems in our region. The Uncrewed Aerial Systems (Drones) Certificate coursework will equip students with the necessary skills to be employed as uncrewed aerial system operators/pilots and technicians. Graduates will learn the laws and ethical procedures for operating Uncrewed Aerial Systems and will have the knowledge and skills to become a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certificated Remote Pilot (Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate). Beginning fall 2025, Uncrewed Aerial Systems is an 18-credit, two-semester certificate delivered in a hybrid format with both online and on-campus components.
