The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST)

Lake Area Technical College is an FAA-approved Test Administrator of The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST). TRUST is a collaboration between the FAA and industry to provide TRUST and educational safety material to Recreational Flyers.

Please note:

  1. After you click the quiz link, you will be directed to complete the registration form. 
  2. You must complete the quiz once you begin. If you exit, you will need to start again. 
  3. Upon successful completion, a certificate will be promptly issued to you. Please save a digital copy and/or print a copy that can be presented, if needed.  

Upon completion of the test, recreational flyers should print or save a digital copy of their completion certificate and keep it on their person when they fly. Lake Area Technical College cannot re-issue your completion certificate if it is lost. The FAA cannot re-issue your completion certificate. Should you lose your completion certificate, you will need to re-take TRUST and obtain a new certificate.

Step One: ELDT Theory

This self-paced online course covers general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles. It is used to satisfy the theory instruction portion of the ELDT requirements required by the FMCSA. You need to complete the course with an 80% or better to pass. Cost: $200

Step Two: Commercial Learner’s Permit (can be started while completing ELDT Theory)
It is recommended that you schedule an appointment with DMV to take the three written exams to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit. The link to South Dakota Appointment Scheduler is at:

Under the New Appointment box select “All Knowledge Testing” and click “Make an Appointment”.

When you go to DMV you will need to bring the following with you:

  • A valid SD Driver’s License.
  • Two original documents proving your residential/physical address. These documents must show
    your name and address and be less than one year old. Examples of such documents are a utility
    bill, a pay stub, a rent receipt, a phone bill, a bank statement, a mortgage document, etc.

Step Three: Behind the Wheel (BTW) Training

Once the driver shows proficiency in all the behind-the-wheel competencies, their information will be uploaded to the DMV and they will be able to schedule the driver exam with a Third Party Examiner. There is a 48 hour wait period to schedule the Third Party Exam. Cost: $1,400/week (number of weeks is dependent on driver’s ability)

driver will conduct a vehicle inspection, perform a brake check, demonstrate backing, and drive a route through Watertown and Interstate 29. If the driver shows proficiency in all these behind-the wheel competencies, their information will be uploaded to the DMV and they will be able to schedule the driver exam with a Third Party Examiner. There is a 48 hour wait period to schedule the Third Party Exam.

Get Your School Bus and Passenger Endorsement – Step by Step Instructions

You must have a current Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License before getting your School Bus/Passenger Endorsement.

Step One: School Bus and Passenger Theory

Commercial Driver’s License Certification Classes

CDL Written Test Preparation and Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Theory – Online

This class is for drivers who are applying for an initial Class A or Class B CDL or drivers upgrading their current CDL from Class B to Class A. This course will cover general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles. The class must be completed with a score of 80 percent or better to satisfy the theory portion of the ELDT requirements.  After completion, individuals will be able to visit their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to take the three written exams to get their Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).  ELDT Theory is valid for one year after completion date.

CDL Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)

Anyone wishing to obtain a CDL (Class A or B) is required to take this training.  Both range and over-the-road instruction will be covered.  The training will be completed in a vehicle of the same group or type that the driver-trainee intends to use for the CDL skills test.  Range training topics include vehicle inspection, cone navigation, as well as backing and parking.  Over-the-road training topics include turns, lane changes, shifting, and visual search.

Dates and times to be determined by CDL instructors’ schedules and participant availability. 

Class Length: This course is competency based. Once students have shown competency in all areas and are ready, their information will be uploaded to the Training Provider Registry (TPR). They can then schedule the driving exam with a Third-Party Examiner.  On average, participants can plan on training 3-4 hours per week for approximately 2-4 weeks.

Cost: $350 per hour

ELDT Fast Track Assessment

Drivers that have experience operating semi-tractor/trailers can schedule a driver assessment with LATC’s CDL instructor.  This is not the same as Behind the Wheel training.  This is a 2-3 hour session where the driver will conduct a vehicle inspection, perform a brake check, demonstrate backing, and drive a route through Watertown and Interstate 29.  If the driver shows proficiency in all these behind-the-wheel competencies, their information will be uploaded to the Training Provider Registry and they will be able to schedule the driver exam with a Third-Party Examiner. Hazmat Driver ELDT Theory

The Hazardous Materials Regulations require every hazmat employer to train, test, and certify every hazmat employee. In addition, drivers who transport hazmat are also required to take modal-specific training.  The Hazmat ELDT Theory course must be completed with a score of 80 percent or better to satisfy the theory portion of the ELDT requirements.  After completion, individuals will be able to visit their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to take the written exam.

Hazmat Theory is valid for one year after completion date.

Before You Sign Up You Must Have:

Who cannot get a South Dakota Commercial Driver’s License?

  • Persons under the age of 18. Drivers are not permitted to cross state lines until age 21. 
  • Persons who have a license under suspension, revocation, cancellation, or disqualification.
  • Persons who are not a resident or domiciled in South Dakota.
  • Persons who have accumulated child support arrearages of $1,000 or more (may be eligible for a six-month temporary).

CPR Courses

Lake Area Technical College’s Corporate Education, in collaboration with Prairie Lakes Healthcare System, offers American Heart Association (AHA) certified CPR courses. These include Basic Life Support (BLS), and Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED.

Course Formats:

  • Online Learning with In-Person Skills Validation: The BLS and Heartsaver courses are available through online modules, followed by an in-person Skills Validation session at Lake Area Tech. Participants must complete the online portion before attending the hands-on session .
  • Instructor-Led On-Site Training: For groups of six or more, Lake Area Tech offers the option to conduct the full four-hour instructor-led class either on-site at the business location or on the LATC campus, upon request .

Certification Details:

  • Upon successful completion of the course and skills validation, participants receive an AHA eCard, valid for two years.
  • The course fee includes the cost of the certification card.

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider Courses

The online HeartCode® BLS Health Care Provider course is designed for professional healthcare providers including EMTs, paramedics, fire fighters, in-facility hospital providers, dental, and chiropractic clinics. The class is a self-directed, comprehensive eLearning program that uses adaptive learning technology to allow learners to acquire and demonstrate Basic Life Support skills using a personalized learning path that adapts in real time to a learner’s performance.

The course has two segments:

HeartCode® BLS Online Course

BLS knowledge and skills are presented using a variety of eLearning assets such as dramatizations, Cognitive Assessment Activities, illustrations, knowledge checks, and interactive activities. This method of learning provides training consistency and adaptability to different learning styles. Students can work at their own pace applying their knowledge to real-time decision making. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each knowledge check and each Cognitive Assessment Activity. After successfully completing the online segment of the class, print your certificate and bring it with you to the Skills Validation class. You will not be able to complete the class without it.

Skills Validation at Lake Area Tech

During the Skills Validation segment, students will demonstrate proficiency in the BLS skills taught in the online course. Please wear suitable clothing and bring your course completion certificate. An AHA BLS Provider course completion ecard will be sent to you following successful completion of both segments.

Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Courses

The Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED Online course is taught in a blended learning format. Students must complete the online portion, followed by the hands-on skills session conducted by an American Heart Association Training Center instructor. Access the online course here.

Skills Validation at Lake Area Tech

During the Skills Validation segment, participants will demonstrate proficiency in the Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED skills taught in the online course. Please wear suitable clothing and bring the online course certificate. Students who successfully complete the online course and Skills Validation session will receive a Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course Completion card, valid for two years.

Class Length: 2 hours
Cost: $45.00 per person 

Lake Area Tech is aligned with Prairie Lakes Healthcare System to provide American Heart Association CPR classes. Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED is designed for anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for their job, regulatory (e.g., OSHA) or other requirements or anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years.

Heartsaver CPR AED – No First Aid

Heartsaver CPR AED is designed for those who have completed First Aid online from another resource or do not need it. This applies to state licensed daycare centers/providers.

Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Inhalation Sedation Certification Course

When: June 11, 2026. This is a 12 hour course lecture done prior to hands-on which is the on 11th.

Where: Lake Area Tech Dental Assisting classroom and clinic

This hands-on 12 hour course is designed to introduce and certify the dental professional in Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Sedation. The course was developed in conjunction with the training requirements for the South Dakota Board of Dentistry. 

The course information will be delivered by instructor-led lectures via computer and in person; as well as, hands-on training in a dental office. There will be a paper test at the conclusion of the course and a certificate will be given up on completion of the course. Participation is limited to 6 students.

Course Objectives

  • Recognize N2O/O2 sedation as a safe and effective method for pain and anxiety management.
  • Identify the physiologic mechanism of pain and the assessment of fear vs anxiety.
  • Recognize the physical and chemical properties of nitrous oxide and oxygen.
  • Recognize the pharmacokinetic properties of nitrous oxide.
  • Identify delivery systems equipment and understand their purposes.
  • Discuss respiratory anatomy and physiology and the influence of N2O/O2 on them.

Home Study Dental Radiology Continuing Education

The programs consist of radiology safety and x-ray production. All programs consist of a CD and a worksheet. After completing the program, a short quiz is taken and returned to the school and then a certificate will be sent out. Each section is $30 and is approved by the SD Board of Dentistry for 1 hour of credit. Intro to Basic Concepts in Dental Radiology

Introduction to Basic Concepts in Dental Radiology is a 16-hour course lecture done prior to hands-on which is on the 12th. This course is designed to introduce the participant to the basic concepts in dental radiography including the nature, generation, and biological effects of radiation. The primary focus will be exposing and processing radiographs to achieve consistent results.

This course meets the requirement for the certificate of registration issued by the South Dakota Board of Dentistry for performing radiography in the dental office.

Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) – Verification of Skills

  • Dates: Online modules start in March and the hands-on portion will be June 1st– 5th, 2026.

This course has been approved by the South Dakota Board of Dentistry, to satisfy the educational requirement leading to “verification of competency.” There is no diploma with this program and no transcripts for the course. This course is not transferrable to other states or schools.

1. Students must complete the online modules with 80% or better competency prior to the hands-on portion on campus. Completion of the entire course is required for a verification of competency. See Qualifications and Requirements link below.

2. Reopened exams and retakes are granted, however, there will be a $100.00 fee per reopened exam and/or retakes granted. Students will not be allowed to move onto next module until previous module has been passed. See Qualifications and Requirements link below.

Qualifications and Requirements

This course is for dental assistants who have let their licenses lapse as well as for assistants that have a minimum of 2000 hours chairside, preferably in general dentistry. Upon completion of the program, the assistant will become a registered dental assistant. To become a certified dental assistant, the assistant must sit for the Dental Assisting National Board Exam.

Documentation Needed at Time of Application*

  2. Payroll Report showing YTD hours
  3. Proof of Health Care Provider CPR level
  4. Proof of HS Diploma or GED

*Applicants who fail to provide the required documentation at the time of application will not be registered and a refund will be issued.

All necessary supplies and materials will be provided. It is highly recommended that participants purchase a Modern Dental Assisting textbook to enhance basic principles.

Module Policy
Each module includes online instructions and testing. Modules must be completed with 80% or better for competency prior to hands-on portion.  Students may retake an exam with a fee of $100 if not passed or missed due date. Missing a due date counts towards a retake.  See Corporate Education cancelation policy below.

If a student fails or misses exam dates more than three times during the five modules, the student will no longer be eligible for the program and will need to sit out until the next course is offered. No certificate of completion will be awarded.

Dental offices paying for a participant’s coursework will be notified of the student’s progress if there are issues.

Participants need to be aware that they will be required to spend an equal amount of time reviewing online instruction in addition to the hands-on courses. Total number of hours to complete the course is approximately 60 hours online preparation and approximately 40 hours of hands-on instruction. Completion of the online test and hands-on competency is required for each function.

Computer Requirements
Having a computer that is operating on the latest operating system, with an efficient processor, adequate memory and storage space will greatly benefit your on-line learning. It is also very important to have an adequate internet connection to allow for more timely transmission of media content and file transfer ability. Dial up connections may make it very difficult or impossible to attain some of the program content.

Module Descriptions

MODULE 1 Infection Control – (required by the state of South Dakota for registration)
This module will provide instruction in microbiology, disease transmission, disinfection, and sterilization techniques. This knowledge will allow you to have the ability to implement the policies and procedures necessary to protect yourself and the patients you serve.

MODULE 2 Diagnostic Skills – (required by the state of South Dakota for registration)
This module is designed to prepare the expanded function dental assistant with the very important function of taking accurate preliminary impressions and bite registrations for use as study models or working casts.

MODULE 3 Preventive Skills – (required by the state of South Dakota for registration)
This module will include the expanded function dental assistant duties of coronal polishing, placement of topical fluorides and the placement of pit and fissure sealants.

MODULE 4 Restorative Dentistry – (required by the state of South Dakota for registration)
This module will include placing and removing dental dams, placing and removing matrices. It will also include placing topical medications, bases and liners. It will also include placing and removing periodontal dressings and suture removal.

MODULE 5 Provisionals – (required by the state of South Dakota for registration)
This module will include the skills in fabrication of posterior, anterior and multiple unit temporaries. It will include the placement of retraction cord, placement of temporaries along with removal of excess cement.

All necessary supplies and materials will be provided. It is highly recommended that a dental assisting text be purchased, borrowed or checked out from a library to enhance your learning experience and the basic principles being taught. Listed are some suggested texts, there are many other good dental assisting books available also.

Legal Implications

Objectives:

Dental Practice Act
In each state statues are enacted by legislature to make rules and regulations. The state board of dentistry is an administrative agency in each state that enforces these statues and rules. Each state has a Dental Practice Act that describes the legal restrictions on the dentist, hygienists, and dental assistants. The Dental Practice Act describes team members as licensed or nonlicensed and lists what is allowed or disallowed duties for each, including expanded functions for dental assistants. The Dental Practice Act for each state gives guidelines for licensing and identifies grounds by which the license can be suspended or repealed. The content in this module addresses the South Dakota Dental Practice Act. As a dental assistants you are advised to access the current State Dental Practice Act for that state when moving to another state to determine that state’s guidelines for delegable expanded functions.

Dental Assistant and Dental Radiographer
The South Dakota Dental Practice Act requires a dental assistant to be at minimum a high school graduate or its equivalent and be at least 18 years of age. In order to expose radiographs the dental assistant must have successfully completed a minimum of a 16 hour board approved course in dental radiograph, pay a fee and obtain a license in dental radiography. Most of you have probably already completed a qualifying course and have this license.

Advanced Dental Assistant
South Dakota’s State Dental Practice Act assigns the duties of expanded functions to the “Advanced Dental Assistant” (ADA) The minimum educational requirement for an ADA is one of the following:

  • Completion of a Dental Assisting program approved by the board
  • Dental Assisting National Board certified
  • Certificate of Competency from the state board

Completion of this course in it’s entirety will give you the educational requirement for making application to the South Dakota Board of Dentistry for a license as an ADA. Performing any expanded duty without this license is performing dentistry without a license and is considered an illegal act. Expanded Functions
Expanded Functions are specific advanced tasks delegated to a dental assistant that requires increased skill and responsibility. These functions are delegated to the dental assistant by the dentist in accordance to the Dental Practice Act. Like all functions the dental assistant performs, the expanded functions fall under the doctrine of respondeat superior. Translated this means “let the master answer.” So, if wrong doing takes place under the guidelines of employment, the dentist is liable for the negligent act. However, this does not mean that the dental assistant is not held responsible and therefore cannot be sued. It merely means that a suit can be filed against either the employee or the dentist or both.

Dental Assistants who perform expanded duties are generally covered under their dentists liability malpractice insurance however is it advised the dental assistants performing expend functions carry their own liability insurance. Current members in the American Dental Assistant Association (ADAA) have a $50,000 professional liability coverage. Other organizations and professional groups offer malpractice/professional liability insurance and risk management information. Be sure to discuss this issue with your dentist/employer to decide your best option.

The expanded functions are further specified according to how they are to be delegated. In South Dakota expanded functions can only be performed by an advanced dental assistant under the direct supervision of a dentist.

Procedures that may not be delegated
South Dakota’s Dental Practice act lists specific procedures that may not be delegated to an advanced dental assistant. Those procedures include:

  • The cutting of hard or soft tissue
  • Intraoral procedures that will be used directly in the fabrication of a dental prosthesis
  • Irreversible procedures
  • The injection of medication
  • The administration of nitrous oxide analgesia
  • The placing, finishing, and adjusting of final restorations; and
  • Those procedures specifically delegated to dental hygienists with the exception of sealants and coronal polishing following a prophylaxis by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Procedures that may be delegated
The South Dakota Board of Dentistry does not specifically list those functions that can be delegated. The following is a list of duties the members of the South Dakota State Board compiled a number of years ago to give some guidance to educational programs in preparing their curriculums for expanded functions.

Board approved CODA accredited DA program curriculum allowable functions not listed for an RDA are as follows:

  • Take impressions for casts and appropriate bite registrations. Advanced dental assistants shall not take impressions and bite registrations for final construction of fixed and removable prostheses.
  • Apply topical medications and fluoride, cavity liners and bases.
  • Place and remove periodontal dressings.
  • Preliminary charting Of the oral cavity.
  • Etch enamel and place sealants.
  • Place and remove rubber dam.
  • Remove excess cement from inlays, crowns, bridges, and orthodontic appliances with hand instruments only.
  • Construct custom trays.
  • Place and remove retraction cord.
  • Prepare, place, and remove temporary crowns.
  • Polish coronal surfaces of the teeth.
  • Remove sutures.
  • Place and remove wedge matrix bands.
  • Place and remove elastic orthodontic separators.
  • Pre select and cement orthodontic bands and brackets.
  • Remove excess cement from coronal surfaces of teeth.
  • Remove and replace ligature ties on orthodontic appliances.
  • Place and remove preformed arch wires.
  • Administer nitrous oxide analgesia with a separate certificate.

LATC Corporate Education Workshop Cancellation Policy
Our workshops and trainings require a great deal of pre-planning, including ordering supplies and tools, booking staff, and making commitments to pay our instructors, all of which is based on the number of individuals who register.  When participants ask to cancel at the last minute, or do not show up at all (this includes scheduled online exams), we lose money.  This, in turn, makes it difficult to keep our class prices competitive.

Basic Welding Course

This course will cover basic wire-feed and stick welding to include safety procedures, equipment familiarization, and machine settings. The course is designed for the beginner, or someone with limited welding experience. Total course length is 24 hours. This class must have minimum of 6 participants to be conducted and a maximum of 10.
