Online learning is very different than traditional on-campus classes. Even though the material is the same, it is presented to you in a different format. The way you will interact with other students and your instructor is also different. Some students may even say they learn more in an online class. You may find the overall learning experience will be more rewarding.

However, online classes are not for everyone. Before you consider enrolling in an online course, consider your learning style. Will it be compatible with online learning and lead you to success? Let’s look at some common characteristics of online learners.

Successful Online Students:

• Have the drive and commitment to complete assignments and other tasks that may be required in an online class.
• Have dedicated time to commit to online coursework and studying.
• Can communicate effectively via the computer.
• Are comfortable using a computer and computer programs.
• Have computers that meet the minimum requirements for the course.
• Have a place free from distractions to complete homework assignments.
• Can send and receive emails.
• Can identify the following file type extensions: .doc, .txt, .jpg.
• Will use a browser to find information on the Internet.
• Have daily access to the Internet.
• Are able to communicate with classmates and instructors if they don’t understand the material.
• Are organized and have excellent time-management skills.

1. Connect: As soon as you receive your instructor’s contact information, connect with them! Shoot them an email and introduce yourself. Ask questions, be proactive. Even though you’ll only have minimal face-to-face time, being connected online will give you both a chance to become familiar with each other. The same goes for other students taking the online course. If the situation presents itself, connect with them as well. Having another student to interact with or bounce ideas off will be beneficial for both of you.
2. Check Technical Requirements: As soon as you receive instructions on how to access your program information and utilize software, be sure to take time to do just that. Walk yourself through those steps to ensure your computer is compatible with the program requirements. This will help ease your mind when your first assignment is ready. Some LATC programs require you to purchase a laptop through the LATC Bookstore in order to have the proper software installed.
3. Dedicate Time and Space: In order to be productive during your study time, it is essential to dedicate time and space. Set aside time in your schedule to study. You might find getting up an hour early is the best time for you to study, or maybe you are a night owl and an evening study schedule works best. No matter when it is, our most successful online learners say dedicated time is important. Just as important is space. No one studies well in a poorly lit room or a noisy TV room. Find a quiet, well-lit room in your home in which to study. If not possible, check out the study areas at your local library. Again, dedicating study space is essential to successful learning.
4. Be Organized: Our most successful online learners will tell you being organized is a must. As soon as you have your course syllabus, record all assignments and deadlines using an online calendar, smart phone, or even a hard copy calendar. Program your online calendar and smart phones settings so you will get text or audio reminders and make a habit of checking them daily. Why tax your brain to remember those things when technology can help you out with that? Being organized also means being prepared to deal with conflicts. Many online learners juggle family and work obligations, so plan ahead for those and organize your time accordingly. Do not wait until the last minute to deal with conflict.
5. Ask For Help: This might be the most important tip for an online learner. Online learning does not have to mean learning in isolation. When you get stuck or off track, ask for help. Your instructor is there for you. Feel free to contact your instructor if you have questions. In your welcome letter, you will also be given contact information for our Help Desk and IT staff to assist with computer issues.

1. Flexible Scheduling – As an online learner, you can access your coursework at any time and from anywhere via computer. Classes are available when you are available. If you have a job, a family, or are a long distance from LATC, you can still attend class and complete your coursework
2. Course Options and Distance Learning – You may already have a career but are you looking for a change? Online learning allows you to continue your education without giving up your current job. There are many areas of study to choose from to fit your needs and we may offer online courses that may not be available in your community.
3. Ease of Use – Online learning is easy to use. The lectures can be reviewed multiple times, unlike an on-campus class that is only delivered once. Assignments are submitted, reviewed, and sent back for your learning convenience. Emailing your instructor with questions will help keep you on the path to success.
4. Study Time – Taking an online course allows you more freedom than a rigid on-campus schedule. Many online courses have a course schedule, but you are free to study when it’s convenient for you. You may have days where you can study in 15-minute chunks and other days when you may have an hour or more. The lectures and lessons can be paused so that you may take notes or continue at another time.
5. Freedom from Distractions – Many students find a traditional on-campus class includes distractions and interactions. Online courses allow you the freedom to study without distractions on your own time. If you miss student interaction, many online courses have forum postings that allow conversations and even questions with others about their learning.
6. Saves Money – Many online students find they save money by not having to commute to campus: no parking fees, no babysitting fees, no extra transportation fees, and no time off work. Some courses also offer an e-text book, which may also help save money.
7. Uses of Technology – Many students enjoy using different types of technology that are available today. Online learning utilizes live and captured lecture videos and demonstrations, quizzes, webinars, forums, blogs and hyperlinks to off-site learning pages. All are great ways to find what works best for your learning success.
