Before You Start
Entrance Testing
Entrance testing helps Lake Area Tech determine your readiness for your chosen program. Depending on your program, you may use ACT, ACCUPLACER, Smarter Balanced or ATI TEAS scores to meet admission requirements. This page explains which tests are accepted, who needs them and how to schedule testing if needed.

Next-Generation ACCUPLACER
The Next-Generation Accuplacer test is required for students who do not have Smarter Balanced test scores or ACT scores that qualify them for admission to their Lake Area Technical College program.
The Accuplacer test is an untimed test consisting of 20-25 questions in each section (Math, Reading, and Writing). The test typically takes 1-2 hours. You will receive test results at the conclusion of the test.
Please submit ACT or Smarter Balance test scores (if available) before signing up to take the Accuplacer test.
To complete Accuplacer testing for LATC, you have several options:
- In-Person Testing at LATC
- Bring a photo ID on test day. This test is given at our testing center in the 100 building-enter door 1A
- Online via Zoom
- You’ll need to complete a short technology checklist in the confirmation email before we can send your Zoom link-testing can’t happen without it. Space is limited, so register early.
- Using a Chromebook? Chromebooks are currently having significant issues with this format. If you have access to another device, we recommend using it instead.
- At another testing facility near you
- If you’d rather test somewhere closer to home, email us at testing@lakeareatech.edu with your full name, date of birth, and the name/city/state of the testing center you’d like to use. We’ll send a voucher within 3 business days, and you’ll schedule directly with that testing center. Some testing centers charge their own fee, so check with them directly.
- Testing at your high school
- Some high schools offer the Accuplacer proctored by the school counselor. Ask your school counselor if this is available to you.
- Testing for another insitution
- If you’re attending another institution, but want to take the Accuplacer at Lake Area Tech, please email us at testing@lakeareatech.edu with your full name and the institution you need to test for. We will send you an email with some additional information and a link to schedule a time to test.

If you would like to study for the Accuplacer, you can do so by following these directions:

- Choose practice tests-Reading, Writing, and Quantitative Reasoning Algebra and Statistics.
The “LEARN AS YOU GO” feature is a great way to brush up on your skills with immediate feedback.
The “PRACTICE TEST” resembles the real testing environment, including the calculator and highlighter functions and the ability to save practice test history.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does testing cost?
Accuplacer is free for students applying to LATC. TEAS and the PN Comprehensive Predictor are $70–$80 plus tax, paid on test day by credit or debit card.
What do I need to bring on test day?
A photo ID is required for every test. TEAS and PN Comprehensive Predictor testers also need a credit or debit card. If you’re testing at another test center for Accuplacer, bring the email with your voucher code too.
Can I retake the test?
TEAS and the PN Comprehensive Predictor can each be retaken up to 3 times, with at least 15 days between attempts. For Accuplacer, please wait until you hear from Admissions before signing up for another attempt.
Do I need to submit my ACT or Smarter Balanced scores first?
Yes, if you have them. Submit those scores (and your official transcripts) before registering for Accuplacer — we use them to determine which sections you still need to take.
Can I test remotely?
Yes. Accuplacer can be taken by Zoom, and TEAS and the PN Comprehensive Predictor can be taken remotely proctored by LATC with Proctorio.
I only have a Chromebook — is that a problem?
For Zoom Accuplacer testing, yes — Chromebooks are currently having significant technical issues. If you have access to another device, we recommend using it instead.
What if I want to test somewhere closer to home?
For Accuplacer, email us at testing@lakeareatech.edu with your full name, date of birth, and the test center’s name and city/state. We’ll issue a voucher (allow about 3 business days) so you can schedule directly with that center.
Can my high school counselor give me the Accuplacer?
Some high schools offer this option through their counselor. Counselors that offer this must have a proctor account with us. Ask your school counselor if they’re able to proctor the Accuplacer for you. If they are, have them reach out to us to request a voucher.
What do I need to do before test day for TEAS or the PN Comprehensive Predictor?
Create an ATI account in advance — that’s where you’ll pay for and take the test. Make sure you know your login information for test day. If you’re testing remotely, you’ll also need to complete a dry run assessment beforehand, or your session will be canceled.
What do I need to do before test day for remote Accuplacer tests?
Complete the technology checklist sent in your confirmation email. If that is not complete at least 24 hours before your test, you may be asked to reschedule.
What if I applied for the Licensed Practical Nursing Program, but did not get in and want to take generals instead. Do I need to take the Accuplacer if I took the TEAS test?
If you applied for the LPN program but did not get in and want to take generals, you need to take the Accuplacer (or submit ACT/Smarter Balance scores) if you have not already done so. The TEAS test is specifically for admission into the nursing program. Admission for generals will require the Accuplacer test or other scores.
What if I can’t make my test date?
If you are running late, reach out to us at 605-882-5284.
If you cannot make it that day, there should be options for canceling or rescheduling in the confirmation email you received.
