WATERTOWN, S.D. – Lake Area Technical College (LATC) and Avera announced today the upcoming construction/remodel of a high-tech nursing simulation center at Pierre’s Capital City Campus. A grant from Avera will provide improved equipment and technology for LATC’s nursing program.

LATC President Tiffany Sanderson said the Avera Learning & Simulation Center will give students hands-on experience in spaces that replicate real patient care scenarios. She added the lab will feature advanced manikins, medical equipment and simulations that help prepare students with the professional skills and confidence needed to enter the workforce.

“We’re excited about this project and are thankful for the support shown by Avera,” Sanderson said.  “It will allow us to expand access to healthcare education in central South Dakota and provide nursing professionals for our communities and facilities of all sizes.”

The center will support high school outreach and tours, skills workshops, recruitment events and professional development for regional healthcare workers. Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre will utilize the space for employee training across multiple health disciplines.

“This new space allows us to create a simulation environment that strengthens both education and patient care in the Pierre area, “said Shantel Krebs, Regional President and CEO of Avera St. Mary’s Hospital. “By providing a shared space for students and our employees to learn, practice and innovate together, we are investing in the workforce of today and in highly skilled caregivers of tomorrow.”
