Cam Corey serves as Vice President of Lake Area Technical College, becoming the fifth individual in the institution’s history to hold the position when he joined the college in November 2023. In his role, Cam oversees day-to-day college operations and works collaboratively with campus leadership, faculty, staff, industry partners, and community stakeholders to advance the college’s mission of building South Dakota’s workforce through career and technical education.

Since arriving at Lake Area Tech, Cam has helped lead strategic institutional initiatives focused on enrollment growth, workforce alignment, operational effectiveness, program expansion, and long-range campus planning. He has played a key role in strengthening partnerships with business and industry leaders while supporting the continued growth of high-demand workforce programs in areas including healthcare, public safety, aviation, advanced manufacturing, agriculture, and emerging technical fields.

Prior to entering higher education leadership, Cam served the citizens of South Dakota for 25 years in law enforcement, retiring in 2023 following a distinguished career in criminal investigations and public safety leadership. Throughout his career, he served as a Deputy Sheriff, Chief Deputy, Special Agent, Supervisory Special Agent, and Assistant Director within the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. He specialized in homicide, sexual assault, child maltreatment, and violent crime investigations and later oversaw all statewide field operations for the Division of Criminal Investigation.

During his time with the Division of Criminal Investigation, Cam was selected to create and lead South Dakota’s first-ever Special Victims Unit, overseeing the state’s Anti-Human Trafficking, Missing & Murdered Indigenous Persons, and Child Maltreatment response divisions.

Cam has taught criminal justice courses at several colleges and universities throughout South Dakota and is widely recognized as a subject matter expert in leadership, resiliency, victim advocacy, and violent crime investigations. He is a frequent speaker and presenter on leadership development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and trauma-informed response.

In 2014, Cam was appointed by the South Dakota Legislature and later reappointed by Governor Dennis Daugaard to Jolene’s Law Task Force, which studied child sexual abuse in South Dakota and developed recommendations for the legislature. Through that work, he helped support the founding of the University of South Dakota Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment. In 2017, he founded REACH, a first-of-its-kind multidisciplinary team within a child advocacy center focused on coordinated child maltreatment response.

Throughout his career, Cam has received more than 24 commendations for service and leadership. In 2018, he received the Outstanding Service Award from the USD Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment for his contributions to child maltreatment investigations, education, and statewide response efforts.

Cam holds a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Keiser University, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Mount Marty University, and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement Technology from Western Dakota Technical College.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Cam remains actively involved in community and youth development initiatives, including leadership within Elite Alliance Volleyball Club and community outreach efforts through law enforcement organizations. He also serves as an on-air broadcaster for Watertown Arrow athletics on ArrowTV. Cam and his wife, Sarah, reside in Watertown and have four children.
