LATI will begin offering the MLT program online on a part time basis beginning fall, 2006. The program is available to all students meeting the admission requirements. Students are required to travel to the LATI campus several times to complete the clinical portions of the classes. In addition, the Practicum courses (one semester of clinical training) must be completed at an approved clinical site.
Students with transferable general education credits or prior learning experiences may be able to complete the course sequence in 2.5 years. Your academic advisor will help you design an education plan that meets your needs.
MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
MLT is a very rewarding profession. It is a fast-paced field that is very important to the world of healthcare. Over 70% of the objective clinical data on which medical decisions are made come from the laboratory and tests that are performed on the patient’s samples. The MLT profession requires knowing the method theory and understanding the test methods, how to use and troubleshoot instruments, how to interpret laboratory results and know when they are absurd and need to be checked. Medical laboratory technicians interact with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health professionals to explain (at times) the test result and answer their questions about laboratory tests and testing. There are also a variety of opportunities for career paths beyond the laboratory.
There is a critical shortage in this profession; all bright, inquiring minds with an interest in science should apply! In addition, the salary and benefit packages are outstanding.
If you proceed with the online program, you should be able to complete the MLT specific course work in 5 semesters of part-time enrollment.
If you have previous college transfer credits—the MLT coursework outlined would take 2 ½ years.
At the end of the coursework there will be a one semester clinical training for all enrolled learners.
The MLT program at LATI is accredited through the National
Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Students successfully completing the program will be eligible to take a national certification examination.
