Why Do I Need A Laptop?
Lake Area Technical Institute has initiated the use of laptop technology because of the intense requirements placed on the students for computer usage in particular fields of study. Making laptops available at all times and having the ability to utilize the latest software in your program of study is extremely important to your success as a student and as a graduate.
Not only that, employers expect you to be the best at what you do. This technology will only add to your arsenal of skills that will give you that competitive edge! Lake Area Tech has purchased state-of-the-art laptop computers and software that is the best of the best.
Leasing A Laptop
New students in the Computer Information Systems and Engineering/Architectural Drafting programs will be required to lease a new laptop from Lake Area Tech. The cost will be approximately $475 each semester. The lease will last the length of the program. Your laptop will be customized with software specifically for your program of study. Once you've completed your program of study, made the required payments and completed the check-out process, the computer is yours to keep!

Helpdesk
Staff of professionally trained individuals is available at the Helpdesk to assist you with problems, questions or minor repairs you may encounter with your laptop. If your leased laptop requires long-term repair, a loaner laptop will be provided. The Helpdesk is located in the IT Department.
Warranty
A three year warranty coverage is included in the semester lease fee. This warranty covers parts and labor.
Upgrading and Adding
Your system will come equipped with the required program of study software. However, if you wish to add software or purchase additional accessories for your laptop, the Bookstore carries a complete line of products.
How Much Is My Laptop?
$475* per semester/plus sales tax (maximum of four semesters) based on program of study (no charge for Summer Session). Lease cost includes required program software.

Want A Laptop, But Not Required?
If you are a student enrolled in any program at Lake Area Tech and would like to purchase a laptop, you may do so by contacting the Bookstore or IT Department. Laptops will be sold for a purchase price of approximately $1900*. Software is sold separately but on-campus Network/Internet usage will be available for no charge.
If you are a second year student in the Computer Information Systems or Engineering/Architectural Drafting program you will also be given the opportunity to lease a laptop for two semesters. However, since you will only be here two semesters, the lease will be approximately $950* a semester. If you choose not to lease a laptop, desktop computers are available in the classrooms.

Refund Policy
Just as all other Lake Area Tech fees and tuition are calculated based on the period of time you were enrolled, so are your laptop fees. For more details on the refund policy, refer to the official Lake Area Tech Student Handbook. If you are leasing a laptop and decide to reduce your credit load, you are still responsible for the entire lease fee.
Stolen Laptops
A stolen laptop will be treated as a criminal offense and should be reported to the IT Department immediately! The IT Department will be able to provide local law enforcement with serial numbers and models. You will be required to complete a theft report with the Watertown Police Department. You will also be responsible for the remaining payments on your lease agreement.
Laptop Damage
Students are responsible for repair charges on damaged laptops.
Should I Insure?
We highly recommend that you insure your laptop against theft, loss or damage. This can usually be done by adding a rider on a homeowner's/renter's policy.
